Fabulous breakfast compensates for a strange lack of atmosphere

An interesting, modern built hotel situated just outside the small town of Kastellaun in southern Germany. It sits on a small hill and is surrounded mostly by open countryside. Interestingly, there is a small, but real, light aircraft parked out front.
The room was spotlessly clean and the facilities good, although the bed was small and not particularly comfortable. The bathroom was good with an effective shower, however, when I first entered the room there was a rather unpleasant drain type smell that never completely went away. Its source was never identified.
There was gratis tea and coffee making equipment and small mineral water bottle. Also there were plenty of plug points for various devices.
There is a Greek restaurant on site operated by a third party. However, I did not eat there, so cannot comment on the quality.
My stay was on a Saturday night, yet the place seemed strangely quiet – the bar remained closed all evening, there only ever seemed to be one member of staff in attendance (not that unusual these days), the sauna was closed as was the gym. Also, the TV room and much vaunted flight simulator(s) were closed for the entirety of my stay.
I hardly saw any other guests that whole evening and the whole place had the strange feel of a ghost hotel – The Shining anyone?!
However, all was forgiven the next morning because the breakfast was one of the best I have ever experienced. There was a huge choice – particularly for vegetarians; fresh fruit and vegetables; a variety of slaws; smoked salmon; cooked meats; open top mini sandwiches; for meat eaters sausages and bacon as well as eggs; fresh bread and a wide variety of rolls and pastries – croissants and pain au chocolat – and hot and cold beverages. All this plus two cheerful, endlessly helpful women ensuring everything is topped up and everyone has all they need. Add to this the plentiful, free parking and good wifi, and it is a reasonable stopover.
In conclusion, a nice enough place to stay if lacking a certain ‘presence’, more than compensated for by an outstanding breakfast experience.

This hotel was further from Cochem than we hoped for. I booked two rooms for one night at least four months in advance requesting large windows that open. We got one room with a very tiny window only, and one room with a medium size window. The staff was very nice and apologized for not meeting my request saying "they didn't know how this happened". The hotel was full that weekend. At least the windows opened. Also, our room had a terrible smell. Apparently, the drain pipe in the middle of the bathroom floor was the culprit. The lady at the desk poured some cleaner down the drain with a few buckets of water. We then covered the drain with a towel and went to the store to get a car scent hanger to place on top. We went to the restaurant for dinner and waited an hour and a half for our meal. They were very busy that night and apparently not prepared for the weekend (May Day). The meal was nice in spite of the wait. The most positive aspect of our experience was the woman at the desk who tried her best to fix things for us.

Caravan stay at camping site

The campsite is adjacent to the hotel. On arrival you park outside the camping barrier and report to hotel reception where you book in and are allocated a pitch. The pitches are all hard standing with no segregation, however when we were there in September it was not very busy, we did have people on the pitch beside for the last two days which was weird as there was plenty of space for this not to have happened.
Check to ensure no local pop festivals/events as we had a very disturbed first night with music and crowd noise until 2:00 in the morning, we did contact hotel reception, but they said they knew nothing of it but would check, luckily was just the one night.
Toilet and washing facilities were excellent being modern and spotlessly clean with free hot showers included. Wifi was also included for free around the campsite. All pitches have individual electric, water and drains points. Mobile reception was good.
The Aphrodite restaurant was fantastic Greek food, we visited 3 times during our stay choosing different meals each time and all 6 meals were superb and good value. Server spoke great English and was very friendly. Aldi supermarket within a 10 minute walk, Kastellaun within a 20 minute walk has some nice cafes and a good place to stroll through the old town.
A great place to stay to explore areas of the Rhine & Moselle valley's.

We booked 3 rooms with air-conditioning during heatwave for multiple days. Upon arrival there was no airco. They offered us to book elsewhere at 9pm. No properties within driving distance w airco. Shower did not drain. Would not recommend. Expedia needs to be more accurate with hotel details so others don't have a similar experience.
