Fun glamping spot

We loved our stay at the Washington location. Lots of hiking and activities nearby. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Glamping at its best. There were good food choices. Amazing views of Mt. Hood.

YOU SHOULD KNOW…

We had good family fun by the fire, with some food and drink. The early evening view of Mt. Hood from the common area is special.
But the experience fell very short of our high expectations that had been shaped by years of following UC marketing efforts.
Our room didn’t really have a view, there are no hiking trails on the property, there are no water features, like a small pool or a plunge… or access to a stream… and the summer days are VERY HOT. The reception was almost 100F when we checked in. And it was still in the mid 80’s after 5pm. This was in June — July & August are hotter.
The only available daytime activities were bracelet making, cornhole, and boardgames… and it truly was too warm to enjoy that… note that we are from the tropics — we are accustomed to heat! Perhaps when the trees grow a bit more, it will work better.
There were several other shortcomings…
Behind tent #12 there is the main access road. I was expecting peace and quiet here, but starting no later than 6am, there were vehicles passing by CONSTANTLY; mostly the hotel’s own electric carts, but they make a surprising amount of noise on the small loose rocks that cover the internal roads.
Also, the junior tent was totally stained / dirty (see photos) and the kids mattresses are on a cheap metal frame, reminiscent of sleepaway camps, but not in a charming way.
And it sounds like a lot for a very short stay, but we were all bitten up by mosquitoes, outside AND inside the tent, and we never left it open.
Another thing that really surprised me was that all beverages (including wine and beer) are served in single-use plastic cups. The food is brought out on disposable cartons. Citing a shortage of water for cleaning dishes and cutlery is not an excuse for this.
There were several other negative things, but you get the message. In general, we were all a bit saddened by the experience. It was our most underwhelming stay during a beautiful, 15-day trip through the PNW. Even my two boys, whom have traveled the world with us, were conscious of many poorly executed details and missed opportunities.
Finally, if you need a base for river sports, for accessing the better local hiking or biking trails, or for the area’s main attractions, UC also comes in a bit short of offering an ideal location.
To sum up: the project has several conceptual weaknesses, many things can be corrected or improved.
* I have to give credit to the staff; most of them try their best to make your stay nice, despite the weak project concept.
I hope that this has been helpful.

Hi Gacho,
Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review. While we're glad to hear you enjoyed spending time around the fire with your family and appreciated the beautiful evening views of Mt. Hood, we're sorry that your overall experience didn't live up to the expectations you had for your stay.
We appreciate your kind recognition of our team and are grateful you felt they did their best to make your visit enjoyable. We'll be sure to share your compliments with them.
We're equally grateful for your candid feedback regarding the location of your tent, road noise, daytime heat, activities, tent condition, mosquitoes, dining service, and overall value. We understand how disappointing it must have been to arrive with high expectations and leave feeling underwhelmed, especially during such a memorable trip through the Pacific Northwest. Your observations about opportunities to improve the guest experience have been shared with our leadership team for careful review.
Thank you again for taking the time to provide such comprehensive feedback. We sincerely appreciate your perspective and the opportunity to learn from your experience as we continue working to improve.

Friendly and helpful.

This was our first experience with Under Canvas and it did not disappoint. Based upon a recommendation from a friend who stayed at another location, we decided to book with Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge. This location has a breathtaking view of Mount Hood. Safari style canvas tenets are spacious and comfortable. While technically in Washington state, it is a great location to make a base camp for exploring the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River area. Located about 75 miles (an hour and a half by car) from the Portland airport, this property is tucked away from the big city while still being close enough to the area attractions. The staff was warm and welcoming, friendly and helpful. Megan helped us book e-bikes with a local company and we had a great time. We will definitely be looking forward to staying at another property with Under Canvas.

Family adventure

Great location. Super secluded and peaceful. Still have to drive to hikes and activities. Great place to come back to after a day in nature. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed stargazing in the evenings. It’s great for outdoor lovers that enjoy the convenience of having all the camping gears set up for you.
