Boutique surf camp done right — quality, calm and genuine hospitality near Canggu
I stayed at Kavo Maison Surf & Yoga Camp in Munggu, just a few minutes from Canggu, and it turned out to be one of the best experiences I’ve had in Bali. It’s a true boutique surf camp, set in a peaceful area surrounded by rice fields, far from the chaos of central Canggu but close enough to enjoy everything the area has to offer.
If you’re looking for an authentic, family-style retreat rather than a party hostel, this is the place.
The rooms are simply beautiful. The property is brand new and meticulously designed, with boho-style interiors, natural textures, warm calming tones, private bathroom and air conditioning. You can really feel the attention to detail — it’s that rare mix of elegance and simplicity that makes you feel immediately at home. The common area, the swimming pool and the open-air terrace overlooking the rice fields are perfect for relaxing, working remotely or spending time with other guests.
The team is fantastic: they welcome you from the very first moment and make you feel like part of the family.
The surf instructors are next level — Tempe is an exceptional coach, patient, professional and able to adapt every lesson to your level, from absolute beginners to those looking to refine their technique.
Surf lessons are offered six days a week, with video analysis sessions twice a week and all equipment included.
Food deserves a special mention. Breakfast is excellent, prepared with care and outstanding ingredients: fresh tropical fruit, smoothie bowls, sweet and savory options — everything you need to fuel your surf and yoga sessions. There are also simple dishes available to order until 3:00 PM, perfect for a light lunch after the waves. Once a week there’s a community dinner, often focused on authentic Balinese cuisine — a great chance to socialize and discover the real flavors of the island.
The location is ideal: just minutes from Canggu, where you can find literally anything — shops, restaurants for every taste, beach clubs and nightlife — and also close to some of the best surf beaches in the area .
If you want to venture further, the inland north of Bali offers waterfalls, temples, hikes and scenic rice terraces. And while getting around on foot in Bali isn’t ideal anywhere, Kavo Maison’s quiet, low-traffic setting actually makes it possible to go for walks or even a run through the surrounding rice fields — something you really can’t do near central Canggu.
Safety is impeccable too: there’s a dedicated security service throughout the night and the staff is always present and attentive during the day, so you feel completely at ease at any time, even traveling solo.
What really makes Kavo Maison stand out, though, is the overall balance. The property is top quality, the location is strategic yet immersed in greenery, and even though it’s a surf camp where you can easily socialize and meet people from all over the world, you’re never pushed or forced to do so. That makes it the ideal choice even for those whose social batteries aren’t always charged at 200% — you can join the group for activities and community dinners, or simply enjoy your own space in total peace.
It’s a rare balance to find in a surf camp, and it genuinely makes all the difference.
