SUNIO CITY HOTEL TIJUANA – Honest Review (Couples & Families Please Read)
We booked through Expedia and initially felt we got a great deal. I travel frequently for work—over 40 hotel nights a year—and I’m a Marriott Bonvoy Elite member, so this review is not coming from a place of bias or unrealistic expectations (January 2026 stay).
Who doesn’t like saving money, right? Unfortunately, in this case, it wasn’t worth it.
Check-in took about 10 minutes, which was understandable due to ID verification for all guests. The lobby looked decent—nothing luxurious, but acceptable.
That said, things quickly went downhill.
The hotel uses physical keys instead of key cards, and the rooms have no phone or additional security lock, which immediately felt unsafe. The parking garage looks extremely dated, with low ceilings—be careful if you’re driving a larger vehicle.
As we walked to our room, I noticed multiple people standing outside their rooms openly soliciting. This made me very uncomfortable, especially since I was traveling with my wife and two young kids. The hallways are tight, and at one point we passed around 10–15 men blocking the walkways. We appeared to be the only family on the property—major red flags.
We were assigned a Premier Room (Room 007), located at the very back of the hotel down a private hallway. It felt isolated, and it seemed like none of the other premier rooms were occupied. The room smelled strongly of fresh paint, the floors were dirty with visible paint stains, and overall it felt unused and neglected.
Although we slept okay the first night, the next morning was another surprise—no hot water. I woke up early to work out and shower, but at 6:30 a.m., only cold water was available. Maintenance only fixes issues if you’re present, so it took over 24 hours to resolve. When the water finally came back, it had very low pressure and brown discoloration. I noticed this while bathing my kids using a clear plastic cup and warned my wife not to wash her face with it.
The pool, which was one of the main reasons we booked, was closed due to “weather,” despite temperatures being 75–80°F in January. The pool was cleaned daily but never opened, which was frustrating—especially since we had to walk past it constantly and our kids kept asking to use it.
Breakfast was decent and included. Ironically, it was the cleanest area in the entire property, likely because the upper level is rented out for events like weddings and parties. It’s clear the hotel prioritizes event guests over hotel guests.
Overall, this hotel may work if you’re traveling with friends or on a short business trip and don’t mind this type of environment. I’m 32, originally from Mexico, live in Southern California, and understand how things can be—but this is not a family-friendly or couple-friendly place.
If you’re used to staying at places like Motel 6 or similar, this might be fine for you. But if you’re looking for peace of mind and a sense of safety, I strongly recommend staying elsewhere.
Our stay ended early when we were asked to leave without a refund after being accused of smoking in the room. I was smoking in an outdoor hallway area near our room, and there were no posted signs indicating it wasn’t allowed. No smoke detectors anywhere either so I assumed incorrectly. A cleaning staff member reported it as smoking inside the room which had me ejected.
In hindsight, this was a blessing in disguise. Stuck to the Marriott and reputable places they feel safer and peel off that layer of insecurity.
