Friendly & Helpful Staff, Excellent Location & WiFi, & Perfect for Bibliophiles

Friendly, helpful staff, particularly Mika, Kudzu, Aoi and Greg. Charming, cozy atmosphere if you are a bibliophile, bedding down amidst shelves of books.
Wifi excellent and reliable. Appreciated the early check-in and complimentary coffee/tea.
Location excellent, just a couple minutes walk from JR Train Station, well-placed signs to guide you to the 4th floor hostel, and even the staff at Niigata's Tourist Info office just outside the train station knew of the Book Inn.
Good selection of books btw, I read several during my 6-night stay. Hope to return again someday. Thank you for the lovely stay.

No problem if you just go to bed.

Unattended. The check-in method corresponded with reference to the wall or the paper because it is attached
Unlike the lower one, the upper one is not completely light shielded. You need an eye mask. Earplugs are also required because some people snore too loudly. Forty-four earplugs were sold for a fee.
It is conveniently located near Niigata Station. No problem if you just go to bed.

Is this what dormitories are like now?

It's been a while since I stayed in a dormitory, but it was the first time I'd seen an unmanned front desk.
I had to open the locked door, but the PIN code was confirmed in the email I received when I made my reservation. The entrance was dim at night, and the engraved button was hard to see.
The private room was quite small, and I had to lay my own sheets on the futon.
The lighting was quite dim. There was no soundproofing, so I had to be careful not to make any noise.
The walls were bare concrete, so it was cold even with the futon over me.
There were lots of books, but they were dusty, probably because no one had read them.
Amenities such as towels and toothbrushes were available for a fee.
You had to put money in an envelope to buy them.
The shower and water area were small, but clean.
It was fatal that the front desk was unmanned.
First-time visitors didn't know the rules.
I guess they were supposed to check their email, but...
Especially at the entrance, I saw several guests regularly looking confused because they didn't know how to open the door.
It's common in these types of hotels that nearby guests leave their alarms on and are very noisy, but there's no one to call for advice, and they make it a rule not to take responsibility for any trouble between guests, so you can't just carelessly complain.
In short, it's not reassuring.
About 5,000 yen is a bit expensive for this. If you use it as a substitute for a hotel, you'll probably end up stressing out.

Not worth it experience

The hostel is pretty new and clean, and definitely very unique, but the lack of guest relations made my experience not worth it.
I met the owner the first day and he seemed an extremely nice and caring person, but once i checked in with the working staff I started to have the first issues.
First they charged me 500¥ extra with no reason. I asked twice and the answer was vey unclear, and they said that they check other hotels price and they try to match. The problem is that nowhere (website, street board or fliers) is mentioned. The price is clear but basically is more than that!
I only accepted to stay because i was coming from 24hrs journey and I was exhausted.
Check in is 4pm and I knew that, but i went there at 3pm and they pointed to me the fact that they suppose to charge me for extra time to sit in the “reception”. The only reason the girl didn’t ask me for extra money is probably because she felt bed that i was very tired.
Anyway the bed was ready as the hostel was pretty empty but there were no way i could get in before 4. When it was the time, i had to ask permission to go to bed as nobody offered me any earlier check in.
Once in bed sleeping, a bunch of guys came in at night time extremely loud, and respectless; the same guys who had a nonstop allarm from 5am! It is not the hostel fault of course, but i felt there were no control about it. I should have imagine that since they give you free earplugs!
As I said the hostel is pretty and definitely good, but for the price i paid it was surely not worth it.

Chic lodge in the old city Niigata

It's peculiar design that made me book this place, and it was like as I saw from the internet. The lady I met while I checked in in the morning was very friendly. Couldn't ask for anything else about the location as it is placed just a stone's throw away from Niigata JR Station and North Bus Terminal (for City Loop Bus).
Even though I couldn't find the location at first because no sign we can notice from the main street, I managed to find it by trial and error haha.
We can do early check in after lunch, and it was such a generous idea, I think, as many hotels/lodgings only allow us to check in after 3pm. The toilet and shower rooms were clean, so as the cell. They also have a nice living room, and small kitchen with a sofa. They sell amenities and rent towels if you apparently forget to bring toiletries. My only downside was the temperature of the cell that probably a little bit hot inside (since it's summer), so I had to open my curtain to just have a colder air came through while I were sleeping.
If you need a nice and chic lodge with your reasonable budget in the old city Niigata, I would recommend this place for you.
