Great hotel a quick 5 minute drive from the centre of town. Very modern and spacious. Has an onsite buffet. Easy parking onsite.

Avoid if you value cleanliness and basic customer service

We recently stayed at Rydges Rotorua for two nights, and unfortunately, it was a pretty disappointing experience.
To start with, the hotel itself is very dated. The rooms are tired, in need of maintenance, and not even close to modern standards. There were areas that felt borderline unclean, but given it was a short stay, we were willing to overlook it.
However, things took a serious turn for the worse.
Due to the cyclone, we decided to stay in for the day. Out of nowhere, a brown, foul-smelling liquid started leaking through the ceiling — dripping onto our beds, the floor, and even onto us in the bathroom. It was honestly disgusting.
We went down to reception expecting at least some urgency or concern. Instead, there was zero apology and very little acknowledgement of how serious the situation was. The response? A casual “would you like a new room?” — which, of course, we had to say yes to.
It didn’t get any better from there. When we went to move into the new room, we opened the door to find a maintenance worker just standing inside with a bucket, looking completely confused. When asked what he was doing, he said he was “looking for a leak” — in the wrong room. We had to physically take him back to the original room and show him the issue ourselves.
That said, the room we were moved to was a completely different experience. It was actually modern (felt like it was in this century), much cleaner, and had a decent view. It genuinely felt like a different hotel compared to where we started.
Which makes the whole situation even worse — because the original room we were placed in was clearly unacceptable and should never have been allocated to guests in the first place.
Overall, this was a very disappointing stay. Between the dated and unclean original room, the serious leak issue, and the poor handling of the situation, I would not recommend staying here.

Hi Harrison,
Thanks for sharing this detailed feedback. We’re very sorry for the issues you experienced, especially the leak and the way it was handled — that’s not the standard we aim for. We’re glad the upgraded Deluxe room was more comfortable, and we appreciate you highlighting the difference. Your comments are important to us and will be shared with management.

Dissapointed - Room 128

It's our first of two nights here, and after a week on the road for work, I was really looking forward to relaxing in the hot pools. I have fond memories of bringing my family here over many school holidays, so I was excited to return.
Unfortunately, the pools looks like they haven't been updated in years. One of the jacuzzis wasn't working, even after I mentioned it to staff twice. During the school holidays the place is very busy, so having only one jacuzzi operating made it overcrowded. The working jacuzzi was cracked, and the entire pool area looked tired and in need of refurbishment.
On a positive note, the reception staff were excellent. The young woman who checked me in was friendly, welcoming, and professional. Our room is comfortable, clean, and overlooks the pools, which is lovely.
The restaurant, however, was very disappointing. The food looked nothing like the photos online. Just before 7pm when we went down for dinner, around half the buffet dishes were empty or needing filling. . There was only one roast meat available (pork), and the potatoes in the curry looked like leftover roast potatoes from the previous night's dinner. Most of the desserts had run out and weren't replenished until I had asked. There was no cutlery available for the deserts and the staff seemed confused or inexperienced.
When I paid for the meal, the restaurant manager asked how it was. I gave him my honest feedback, but instead of listening, he became defensive. Even after I mentioned that I was staying for another night. He responded by saying, "Maybe you should eat somewhere else tomorrow night." I was genuinely shocked by that response. It was unprofessional and completely unacceptable from someone in a management position.
At $65 per person for a inhouse guest, the buffet simply isn't worth the price. Between the poor quality of the food and the restaurant manager's attitude, it was a very disappointing experience. The reception team provided excellent service, but unfortunately the restaurant experience lets the Rydges down....

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. While I am pleased to hear that you found your room comfortable and enjoyed the pool outlook, and that our reception team made a positive impression, I am genuinely sorry that other aspects of your stay fell short of expectations.
It is especially disappointing to learn that your return visit did not reflect the positive memories you had of staying with your family in the past. We understand how frustrating it must have been to find one of the spa pools not operating fully during a busy school holiday period, sometimes repairs are delayed while we source parts. Your comments regarding the condition and presentation of the pool area have been noted and will be shared with our management team for review.
I am also sorry to hear about your experience in our restaurant. The buffet should be well stocked throughout service, reflective of the quality and presentation we promote, and supported by friendly service. The issues you encountered are certainly not the experience we aim to provide our guests.
Once again thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
Regards Maureen

Obviously air smells of sulfur even with all precautions. Corridors are noisy as it's full of children running around.
