Losing its way
For example one evening the restaurant was given over to karaoke but the room service menu turned out not be available as it seemed no one had ordered the food in ! After much argument, bread, cheese and ham was provided.
Empty drinks glasses were often left uncollected for hours in the lounge.
The clientele generally is elderly and there for thermal medical packages.
Lovely area down by the river which could be wonderful with some TLC
Rooms okay, a little dated
Some strong plus points :
- great location with fantastic walks right from the hotel
- excellent food although limited choice
- huge pool although needs hot weather as not heated as much as advertised
- lots of seating areas inside and out
- 20 minutes drive from le Train Jaune

Stunning Pyrenees Setting with a Touch of Wes Anderson
The hotel itself has a wonderfully distinctive character. There is something almost Wes Anderson-like about it, the slightly faded grandeur, retro interiors and atmosphere give it a charm quite unlike a conventional modern hotel. That said, the bedrooms themselves feel distinctly 1980s in décor and especially the bathrooms could benefit from some updating.
It did take us a little while to orientate ourselves after arrival. There is quite a lot available across the hotel and thermal resort, but the onboarding could have been better. A clearer introduction at check-in to the facilities, pools, thermal treatments and how everything works would have helped us make more of the experience from the outset. The hotel seems particularly geared towards longer-stay guests using the thermal facilities, who presumably become familiar with its rhythms quite quickly.
The food was very good, and we particularly enjoyed exploring the local wines alongside it. Dining at the hotel complemented the relaxed atmosphere and meant there was little need to venture elsewhere in the evening.
Overall, we had a very good experience. The spectacular Pyrenean setting, fantastic pool views, food and slightly quirky old-world atmosphere make Le Grand Hôtel a very special place. We would definitely return.

A timeless experience in the Pyrenees
The staff is welcoming and attentive.
A special mention for the cuisine in each of the restaurants. The food is very well-prepared and refined.
