Amazing weekend staycation!

I booked an overnight stay for a friend as a bday present through booking.com. My friend, her sister and her son really enjoyed their stay. The hotel is in the middle of the city, the room is spacious, with a sofa bed, and they had an amazing time at the pool area and the restaurant. The hotel even gave her a birthday cake. I will definitely check this place out the next time I am in Manila. Thank you Hotel Benilde for offering a great stay at a great price point.

Inconsistent communication and poor handling of situations

We recently stayed at Hotel Benilde primarily because of its very convenient walking distance to an event we were attending. Given the nightly rate and the consistently high ratings across travel platforms, we arrived with fairly high expectations and genuinely hoped for a pleasant stay.
We arrived around noon, fully aware that check-in was at 2:00 PM. Since no rooms were available yet, we left our luggage and explored the surrounding area. While this is not the hotel’s responsibility, guests should be aware that the area is extremely busy with both vehicular and foot traffic, and crossing the streets can feel unsafe due to poorly managed traffic stops. Being located in the university belt also makes it surprisingly difficult to purchase alcohol nearby, which may be useful information for some travelers.
We returned to the hotel around 1:45 PM and waited in the lobby expecting to be called once a room was ready at 2:00 PM. By 2:05 PM, we had not been approached despite sitting directly across from reception. When my husband went to ask, we were told that a room was already ready. This gave the impression that the room may have been available earlier but communication was lacking.
The bellboy who assisted us was genuinely one of the highlights of our stay; very kind, professional, and helpful. The hallways and common areas are also well-maintained and give a good first impression of the property.
However, upon entering our room, we immediately noticed a large brown stain on the carpet and other noticeable stains on the curtains . We chose not to request a room change at the time, but this was disappointing given the price point of the hotel.
There was also confusion regarding breakfast. When booking online, we declined the add-on breakfast, but upon check-in, we were informed that breakfast was included. The first morning went smoothly, aside from the buffet and coffee being underwhelming. I ordered a latte separately and was asked to sign a charge to the room, which was understandable. But there was no mention of the buffet being charged to the room that day- which I would have disputed right away.
On our last morning, while my husband was checking out, I was seated at the restaurant with our two-year-old son eating breakfast when a staff member approached and asked if we would be charging the buffet to the room. I explained that we had been told breakfast was included. I then noticed multiple staff members looking toward us while they tried to sort out the confusion. My husband was asked whether I could stop eating while they clarified the situation. This was honestly humiliating and unnecessary, especially in front of other guests and with a small child. We decided to leave instead of finishing our meal.
Another instance occurred on our last evening when my cousin visited. We complied fully with the guest policy and left her ID at the front desk. We brought a bottle of wine to the rooftop patio after borrowing glasses and a corkscrew from the hotel. We were the only guests there and enjoying the ambiance when staff approached us around 9:30 PM to inform us that outside alcoholic beverages are only allowed inside guest rooms. There is no visible signage indicating this policy at the rooftop. While the staff eventually allowed us to finish our glasses, the interruption felt unnecessary and again highlighted unclear communication of hotel rules.
The rooftop itself is beautiful but small. The pool area appears poorly maintained with wilted plants, and the constant loud humming from nearby machinery makes it difficult to relax or have a conversation.
Lastly, we were quoted 2,800 pesos for an airport transfer for a very short drive to NAIA, while a Grab ride costs roughly 250 pesos. Of course this is optional but I feel people should know especially if they don't use apps like Grab to compare taxi prices that the hotel airport transfer rate felt disproportionately priced.
Overall, the recurring issue throughout our stay was not a single major problem, but a pattern of inconsistent communication, unclear policies, and handling of situations that left us feeling uncomfortable as guests. For the price point, we expected smoother operations and more guest-oriented service.
We hope this feedback is helpful, as the hotel itself has a lot of potential and some very kind staff members. We truly hope our experience was an exception rather than the norm.

still impressive

great to be back in this hotel after six years!
another workshop has been conducted by my alma mater. despite the heavy rains brought about by a recent super typhoon, the show must go on. i decided to attend in spite of the work suspension. the hotel staff was very welcoming from the guards, receptionists and waiters who all took their job seriously and cheerfully.
restrooms were all clean & smelled good. wifi was stable and strong. and we never encountered a problem with the audio system.
the parking is still cramped, as always. we had to be really extra careful to manoeuvre our way out of the tight exit ramp, the curved walls of which, by the way showed proof that it was really accident-prone.
