They are trying, but not quite there.
The good: Hans the manager kept in contact to advise us of what was happening, he provided free transfers to and from Stone Town central. The staff (James and the lady who served us in the bar) were excellent, very friendly and welcoming and we couldn’t have asked more from them. The hotel was generally clean, the beds comfortable, and cool air in the room.
The not so good: The hotel is in some need of some maintenance. The shower was a dribble, the toilet didn’t really flush, electrical fitting from ceiling were hanging loose. There was no top sheet on the beds just a blanket which was strange. We also had a problem with our arranged transfer from Nungwi to the hotel so we had to arrange our own taxi which cost us an extra $10. We were also charged an extortionate exchange rate by the man in reception when I bought a bottle of water ($1 for 1000 shilling) he also promised to bring me my $2 change which never materialised.
In summary, probably not my first choice to return to, but the price reflects what you get.

Ghost Hotel
The staff was so cold and unfriendly and on a go slow. I could not eat the breakfast, the bread was stale, the tables were filthy and the were ants all over. The staff was so cold and unfriendly.
It was just like ghost Hotel.

There is no point staying here - and its also nasty
After staying at this hole, I can now refer to the worst accommodation I have ever had the misfortune of paying money for. The hotel’s only redeeming features could only be made by mentioning what negative features it did not have.
I don’t remember it smelling too bad. That was a positive. The breakfast did not make us violently sick. That was a relief. We were charged what was agreed – oh the service!
The girlfriend booked this place cos it was the ‘closest’ to the airport, but in Stonetown everything is close to the airport so in short, book anywhere else.
It really was a kaleidoscope of awfulness.
- was in an awful, filthy neighbourhood
- was swarming with mosquitoes – at the check in, in the hallways, in the room, in the bathroom
- the place itself I think was assembled from material found at a junkyard
- the mosquito nets didn’t even reach the end of the bed.
- hot water ran out after 2 minutes
- beds weren’t even made when we got there – had to ask reception for pillows, sheets etc
- the pillows were filled with what was probably wood and paper and used tissues – lumpy, hard and smelly
- best of all, the view from the 30cm2 window in the room was… of a dirty concrete wall! Well done Island View Hotel!
I can say with objectivity and without any maliciousness it was a tragic and awful place.
