Hostal Alaska was a great choice in an excellent location. Would recommend.

We spent 2 days in Madrid. We found this hotel with an excellent Location. It was clean with a spacious bathroom and very friendly staff. Walking distance to museums and plazas. We stumbled upon street concerts and local holiday celebrations. Side streets packed with nice outdoor restaurants.

Bad experience

I warn you to be careful about the charge you make on your card. They charged me a greater amount than they set and have not rectified, nor apologized.

Charged higher than contracted and not returned.

Book a room for a price, which was confirmed and before arriving they charged my credit card for a higher amount. They didn't rectify, they didn't apologize and they didn't give me back the difference. I've lost confidence in that establishment and I'm warning you to be careful about it.

Stay elsewhere… my advice.

1) Difficult to locate, very little signage to indicate their location.
2) it was apparent that the day and evening “desk ladies” do NOT want to be there. It was the worst customer service I have experienced in years of traveling the globe. Both should be terminated immediately!!!!
Rude, condescending, do not give a flying frisbee attitude about the guest(s). Treat you as though you are an inconvenience for attempting to have a conversation with them !!!
3) we were informed the room was newly remodeled. Yet after we ( two people ) took short morning showers 100% of the bathroom floor and 1/4 of the main room was flooded with water as the drain for the shower does not appear to work well at all. Since the floor is tile, it made it a “Disney on Ice” trying not to
slip and break your bottom or hip dressing and packing to depart the room / facility.
4) There is no way to control / adjust, that I could discover, the air conditioning. Therefore we were wearing multiple layers of clothing so as not to freeze to death overnight. The blanket on the bed(s) was as thick as a sheet of Saran Wrap, we requested a second blanket and were told NO.
Do yourself a favour and arrange lodging elsewhere.

An expensive crash pad

What a disappointment. The worst value I have encountered in Madrid.
Pros: This place is adjacent to the Puerta del Sol, which makes it convenient to the metro and other central places in Madrid. The room was very clean with AC and the balcony does look down on the street. It's surprisingly quiet considering the noisy street below. Communication was good after booking the room.
Cons: The entry is dark (and scary, frankly), with garbage on the floor and a rickety elevator. Desk staff is not friendly or welcoming but will answer your questions if they can. We were promised help getting a taxi and then they didn't. Staff is noisy in the morning when they have a sign asking guests to respect others who may be trying to sleep.
This is a sterile room with a bed, a bathroom, a tv, 2 tv trays, and 2 plastic chairs.
I would advise you to keep looking if you are searching for charming, friendly and reasonably quiet. For 220 euros a night, you can do better.
