The Moxy is definitely a good option for affordable stay in Shanghai. The location itself might be a little bit away from the main attractions but still, nevertheless , accessible. I was comfortable during my stay.

Less Moxy, More Borstal

I’m generally a big fan of the Moxy brand. I’ve stayed in several over the years and have recommended them to friends and colleagues more than once. Sadly, this particular property was the exception.
The odd thing is that there wasn’t one catastrophic issue. It was simply difficult to find anything that felt quite right.
I booked the corner suite, which was clean, spacious and comfortable enough. Unfortunately, the bedroom window was entirely frosted, so the room came with precisely no view whatsoever. Curiously, the enormous bathroom featured a perfectly clear window, meaning the best panorama of the city was reserved for anyone seated on the throne.
Check-in lacked any real warmth. I was offered a welcome drink of Pepsi or 7UP, which was then rather confusingly served in what appeared to be a takeaway coffee cup. It all felt slightly surreal.
The restaurant and lounge area upstairs somehow managed to miss the usual Moxy vibe. Rather than “industrial chic”, it leaned more towards “young offenders’ institute common room”.
Breakfast was disappointing, not helped by the collection reminders emitting deafening alarms every few minutes. Nothing quite says “relaxing breakfast” like feeling you’re about to evacuate the building.
The communal areas also felt tired. Stickers were peeling from the walls, the lift indicator appeared to be held together with tape, and there were numerous other signs that maintenance had fallen behind. The hotel also seemed exceptionally well prepared for a fire, with substantial amounts of firefighting equipment and boots by the lifts, plus what looked like an emergency fire kit stored in my room. While I’m all for good safety standards, it’s difficult not to wonder if the building knows something the guests don’t.
The Wi-Fi was similarly inconsistent. At times it was excellent; at others it seemed to disappear entirely.
Finding the hotel entrance proved more difficult than expected thanks to limited signage, resulting in an extended tour of the shopping centre beneath before I eventually located reception.
I also attempted to order food using the QR code provided, only to be met with repeated errors. When I asked whether there was another way to order, the answer appeared to be… no.
As I said at the outset, I genuinely like the Moxy brand. Every other Moxy I’ve stayed in is somewhere I’d happily return to and recommend. This one, unfortunately, is the outlier. If someone asked me where to stay in the area, I’d suggest finding another Marriott property instead.

An acceptable stay

I had a very brief 1-night stay here. It has the usual Moxy layout, but seems to attract all sorts of guests --- not just the young/cool.
The room was nice. I had a corner room facing North-West. It was quiet and pleasant. I didn't try the breakfast. There was also some confusion over the welcome drink.
The staff were good.
Overall, it was perfectly OK.

Comfy Beds, Nice View, You know what you are gonna get with a Moxy. No welcome drink though, sound proofing could be slightly better. Bit hard to find the place! A bit out the way also. But all good would stay again.

Stay here everytime I visit Shanghai. Best value for money I find. Convenient location not too far to town although Metro is 10 mins walk away.
It’s less crowded here and close to Xu Jia Hui where there are clusters of shopping malls
Room size is decent and nice decor
