Good, clean, inexpensive.

Spontaneously booked after a long hike along the coast. Very nice, helpful owners, clean, very comfortable bed. Simple but well maintained and inexpensive. We'll be back!

A friendly family-run hotel with a wonderful location

There's a lot to like about Samaria - very friendly hosts, the room was clean, modern and with efficient air conditioning, the location is excellent close to the wonderful beach and services. Perfect for even a longer stay, although I stayed only overnight. I enjoyed breakfast and a decent selection of drinks in the restaurant. Overall, very good value for money.

Good rooms, very helpful manager

The owner Prokopis enjoys joking and talking with visitors - in the three days we were there I saw him help 3 different people with travel advice and even cash advances, including in basic German. One day I mentioned we might hire a kayak; a little later he told me maybe have a rest today as there might be a storm this afternoon. And Georgia answered our more complicated questions about Greece in perfect english. Thanks to you both for a memorable stay. PS Agia Roumeli is a great place to stay, not just to catch the ferry after Samaria. Good food (esp. Pachnes), nice beach, great walk to the Turkish fortress/castle above the town, amazing free beachfront campsite too :-)

Bad taste in mouth...

Stayed at the Samaria Pension last week. I have to say, Agia Roumeli / Samaria Gorge was one of the highlights of our trip, and the room we had at Samaria, with a big balcony looking out to the sea and the mountains was, for the price, an absolute steal! We had our ritual happy hour drink on the balcony each evening to watch the sun set before dinner.
The owner is a big personality, and makes you feel extremely welcome as his guest. Unfortunately the guest/host relationship involves an immense amount of pressure to eat at his restaurant. After he "caught" us eating at another restaurant one evening, his demeanour completely changed and we never again experienced the warmth he showed us on the first day.
If his restaurant had been overwhelmingly good, we may have been happy to eat there every meal. Unfortunately it wasn't, and we found much nicer food elsewhere. Creeping around town at meal time, feeling guilty and nervous about getting 'busted' again put a negative tinge on the whole experience. Out of a weird sense of loyalty we did eat breakfast there every morning, which was repetitively underwhelming.
In summary, honestly, the room was brilliant, but if I were to go back I would stay at Calypso. I can't vouch for the rooms, but the food in the restaurant and the staff are top notch.

Needs attention

We stayed here after walking down the Samaria gorge. It is in an excellent position overlooking the sea and we had a pleasant room with a balcony. However, during the night, I was woken by the sound of water dripping and found the floor awash. Fortunately, the rug on the floor had soaked up quite a lot or our backpacks etc which were on the floor would have been soaked. The owner said it was from the air- conditioning and seemed to blame us for using it! We had turned it off in the middle of the night - if not, the mess would have been even worse.
We were obliged to eat here as part of our booking and the food was quite good; however, I was surprised that there was no black tea - the only place we stayed in 2 weeks which didn't have it - and our very expensive orange juice was watered down and tasted like juice from a carton.
