Very Good Accomodation in Wonderful Casco Viejo

7 Kale N and B is highly recommended. Room is at a competitive price in wonderful location, Casco Viejo. Double and single beds with top class mattresses and bedding; very clean and organised accommodation. Compact Bedroom and bathroom, very clean. Corridors and elevator very clean. Please move the TV mounted at head height beside bathroom door. The room was tranquil until street noise at 8:00 am….Fair enough. Breakfast selection was fine, not extravagant ; fruit, cereal, ham, cheese, boiled eggs, good coffee/tea. The girl organising the dining room was efficient and helpful. The left luggage room is not locked but very convenient. The notification of the three entry door codes could be a day earlier for those on flights. Bilbao is wonderful. Four stops from San Mames on the Metro; exit Unamuno. Well done, Thank you.

We did not like it

We booked 4 nights at this hotel; there were 3 of us.
I regularly checked in online the day before and they had confirmed that everything was okay and that I would receive an email with all the data for entering the property.
On the day of arrival, I did not receive any email; luckily we arrived before 1:00 PM and found someone who opened up for us, then I discovered that the codes had been sent via WhatsApp to a wrong phone number (we had not indicated a number since the field was not mandatory) and not by email. If we had arrived later, we would not have known how to get in. However, no clear instructions were given on how to enter the codes; luckily we did some tests before going out and a staff member kindly helped us.
On the morning of the second day, we left 3 towels on the floor (2 large and one small, in addition to the one for our feet) so that they would change them, as happens in any hotel where we have stayed. Upon returning in the evening, we found these towels rehung on hooks, still damp, and the room very cold with the air conditioning on at 20 degrees.
I immediately wrote a message to the number from which we later received the information for entry, explaining the situation and that this way of operating was not hygienic, also because we no longer knew who had used the two large towels and that I expected them to be replaced the next day.
The response came only the next day, saying that their internal policy is not to change towels for stays of less than 4 days and the cost for the change is 2 euros per piece and that it was indicated on the room door.
I pointed out that there was no notice on the room door or in the bathroom. Such information had not even been given at the time of check-in, nor does it appear in the booking confirmation, much less on the hotel website. I asked to change these towels at least once at no extra cost, given that the situation was created following their failure to communicate.
They apologized for the inconvenience and the misunderstanding but insisted that they would only make the change by paying 2 euros per piece. The same day (it wasn't there upon our arrival!) they posted a notice, but only inside the entrance door, stating that for stays of less than 5 nights (!) the change only takes place upon payment of an extra fee.
I pointed out that their policy is contrary to the regulations in force for 2-star hotels (the category in which the property is legally registered) and that in any case, there isn't even a place to hang the towels; there are only a few hooks in the very small bathroom, so it is not possible to let them dry, but nothing was done to remedy this inconvenience, for example by providing a drying rack.
I also communicated the issue of the air conditioning, pointing out that even if the temperature was changed, after a while, even during the night, it was automatically reset to 20 degrees, which clearly goes against their energy-saving policy so touted regarding the towel change issue. They did nothing; the situation remained the same for all the following days; you couldn't leave the air conditioning on either during the day or at night, otherwise at a certain point you would freeze.
Other points about the property that we didn't like:
- It is located in the historic center; our room looked out onto a cramped internal courtyard with a view of concrete walls, but at least we couldn't hear the noise from the street, which was very crowded until late in the evening. However, you could hear every little noise coming from the neighboring rooms and the hallway.
- The bathroom was tiny, you could barely turn around, and as mentioned, there was no place to hang the towels, there was no bidet, and no toilet brush to clean the toilet (see photo).
- There was no table or desk (mandatory according to current regulations), and there was no rack to place our suitcases, which therefore had to be left on the floor.
- The closet had no doors and no shelves (only one large one under the rod with 5 hangers) or drawers. No hooks to hang jackets or anything else in the room.
- The nightstands consisted of two recycled plant stands with three tiny, very uncomfortable shelves.
- The cleaning in general was quite good, but there was a thick layer of dust on the chandelier (see photo).
- Breakfast was rather poor, with little choice and medium-low quality products (except for the orange juice) that were replenished very slowly. There are few tables available in the room, and we often had to wait for them to become free.
Basically, given the terrible treatment received and the rather unsatisfactory price-quality ratio, I do not feel like recommending this establishment and I would not return.

Fabulous b and b in amongst the old town

What a great find. Located right in the Old Town adjacent to bars and restaurants, this is a clean and convenient location. The atmosphere was relaxed and staff very helpful
Rooms were basic, spotlessly cleaned and serviced daily. Outstanding value for such a busy weekend in Bilbao.
Make sure to familiarise your self with the entry codes provided pre arrival.
