Disappointing customer service: charging for nearly empty consumable items
It was all the more disappointing how a small matter was handled at the end of our stay. In the rooms, there were small, non-fixed, and non-refillable liquid soap dispensers. These seemed like standard consumable or personal care items provided to guests, which is why we assumed that—similar to small shampoo or shower gel bottles—they were intended for use. The dispensers were also nearly empty and contained only a minimal amount of soap.
Despite these circumstances, we were charged in full for two of these soap dispensers. Even more disappointing, however, was the communication. Instead of showing understanding for the misunderstanding or finding an accommodating solution, we were told multiple times that we were legally and lawfully in the wrong. Our arguments that, from our perspective, these were normal consumable items and not refillable dispensers that are a permanent part of the room equipment were not addressed at all.
It is not about the amount of money for us, but about how guests are treated. With a group of 16 people who generated significant revenue at the hotel within two days, we would have expected significantly more accommodation and appreciation. Instead, we got the impression that the hotel preferred to insist on the demand rather than find a customer-friendly solution.
It was particularly disappointing for us that two older people from our group—our grandparents—ultimately had to pay the bill. Both had been guests of the hotel before and did not want to let the situation escalate unnecessarily. Instead of taking these circumstances into account and finding an accommodating solution, the hotel stuck to its demand. This gave us the impression that the hotel relied on the fact that older guests are more likely to avoid a discussion and would rather pay the amount. We find this approach very strange and anything but customer-oriented.
It is a shame, because the stay itself was pleasant. However, the handling of this complaint has left a lasting negative impression. For this reason, we unfortunately cannot recommend the hotel in terms of customer service and complaint management.

Fine hotel with industrial history
The house has been stylishly and accurately decorated.
The rooms are tastefully decorated and everywhere you are reminded of the hard work in the Zollverein colliery.
The bathroom is superb. The cleanliness is just as good.
You will be welcomed very friendly at the reception.
The breakfast is very rich and the choice very wide. The price-performance ratio is right.
This hotel in this location can be highly recommended by me.

A very cool and comfy property near Gelsenkirchen arena.
Straightforward and friendly.

Notes:
A few interesting observations for the property.
There were…no fridge no phone and no safe in the room. Deliberate choice by the hotel, when asked about it.
It is located right in the middle of a UNESCO site. The coal mine was right there and now you can explore the site and a museum. Hotel’s decoration shows that as well. The interior design is very cool and modern. From the color choices to lighting to furniture, it is a very cozy property throughout.
The highlight of our trip, however, was to see the dancer of the TS, apparently they were staying here as well, at least half of them. My kiddo was star struck.
Overall weighted score: 5.0 out of 5.0
Would we come back? Yes and Yes, especially if you are going to Gelsenkirchen arena.
