Beautiful Grounds, but Inconsistent Rooms and a Disappointing Spa Experience
Vihula Manor has beautiful grounds and a lovely resort-like setting, but much of the property feels run-down, and the quality of the accommodations seems extremely inconsistent.
I was initially placed in a tiny, dated room in the Distillery. The window wouldn’t open, the bed was uncomfortable, and the “view” was essentially just a small patch of grass. I requested a transfer and was moved to the Zen room in the Laundry House. Although it was supposedly the same room class and rate, it was significantly larger, much better put together, and had a fantastic view of the lagoon. The stark difference between two rooms priced the same was surprising.
Even the better room needed attention. There was mold around the bathroom threshold, and I wasn’t told about the motion-sensor alarm aimed toward the windows. When I noticed it, I briefly worried that it might be a recording device until I searched online and figured out what it was. Guests should be informed about something like this at check-in.
Both rooms required navigating many stairs, and no one offered to help with my luggage. This is worth knowing if you have heavy bags or mobility limitations.
My spa experience was also disappointing. I booked a 75-minute treatment but received only about 60 minutes. The body scrub—the main reason I chose that particular treatment—was not performed. Instead, I was sprayed with a peeling product. The robes could also be offered in a wider range of sizes.
The grounds are genuinely beautiful, and I wish I’d had more time to explore them. Vihula Manor has the atmosphere and potential of a wonderful countryside resort, but the inconsistent rooms, visible maintenance issues, lack of assistance, and spa experience kept the stay from living up to that promise.
