Wang Sanqing Art Village** is tucked away in the mountains and waters of Shenxian Valley, at the foot of Mount Sanqing in Shangrao, Jiangxi. Surrounded by mountains, the valley is crossed by two clear streams, with bamboo groves, ancient trees, meadows and river stones unfolding naturally with the landscape. To the south lies the old village of Baqi; to the east, the western peaks of Mount Sanqing; and to the west, the cloud-capped ridges of the Huaiyu Mountains. It feels far removed from the city, yet never disconnected from the rhythms of everyday life. We have spent many years learning to understand this land. At first, we simply wanted to create the kind of countryside retreat we had always imagined. Over time, however, we came to realise that what truly deserves to remain is not a beautiful building, but a way of reconnecting with the mountains, the land, and the passage of time. And so, little by little, Wang Sanqing became what it is today. Guest rooms are scattered throughout the valley and among the trees, connected by an art museum, an art library, a café, lawns, bamboo groves, streams and a collection of spaces designed for everyday living. Here, art is not something deliberately placed in the countryside as decoration. It becomes part of the architecture, the furniture, the objects we use, the books we read, the exhibitions we encounter, and the ordinary moments that unfold each day. You can spend an entire afternoon sitting beside the stream, watching sunlight shimmer on the water. You can walk through the bamboo forest and listen to the wind moving through the leaves. You can visit an exhibition at the museum, browse a book in the library, or have a cup of coffee at the café. Or you can choose to do absolutely nothing — simply wander through the valley, sit quietly, and watch the clouds drift across the distant mountains. What we try to do is simple: respect the land as it is, and use contemporary aesthetics, architecture and ways of living to help reveal the beauty that might otherwise go unnoticed. For this reason, Wang Sanqing is not a hotel in the conventional sense. It is closer to an art and lifestyle community that has grown naturally within the valley. There is mountain living, and there is art. There is nature, and there is everyday life. There are quiet corners for solitude, and there are spaces in which to share time with family and friends.
