Excellent
Absolutely beautiful place to stay. Everything was clean and tidy. The staff are all helpful and friendly. Short walk into town and the rail way station.
The garden is a peaceful place to relax after waking around York all day.
We had the continental breakfast which was very good, a cooked one is available too.
Would go back and stay again

Enjoyable and Cool First Stay at the Bar Convent
Very helpful staff. Really appreciated being able to leave my luggage both before and after check in. I stayed during the heatwave, and really appreciated my superior single room with air conditioning. Bed was comfortable and it was a very good shower. I did not make full use of breakfast, as I need my double macchiato early morning- so paid a visit to a nearby coffee bar. Would definitely stay again.

A restful stay
I had stayed at a convent somewhere else and loved it, so wanted to try again. The Bar Convent was great.
They do have an elevator, but it was out of service during my stay. They very generously had someone bring my bags up and then down when I left -- the stairs I could manage on my own, but not my luggage!
My room was at the top, and I loved that I could see a bit of the city walls out my window! It was sufficiently spacious, and I really appreciated that there were hooks as well as a wardrobe, AND a towel rack in the bathroom. It was also a very nice, large shower (you have to turn the power to the shower on outside the room first, then you can actually turn the water on). The room was clean and minimal, as befits a convent setting.
The hotel is located just -- and I mean just -- outside one of the city gates, but probably a 15 minute walk from city center. That was a nice balance for me of access with distance. Five minutes' walk from the train station.
If you book direct, you get a free hot breakfast, which is definitely worthwhile. And the cafe area is really, really nice.

Excellent value, great location.
Clean, very comfortable accommodation in this historic house within easy walking distance of York Railway Station.
Excellent full English breakfast is served in the on-site café.
I hope to return and would be happy to recommend to friends.

Wonderful stay, so much history to take in
This was my first time staying at the Bar Convent but I will definitely be back.
The building has loads of history and there is a heritage centre on site plus a cafe open to the public. It's over the road to Mickelgate Bar, one of the old gates to the city and about a 10-12 mins walk to the main attractions and shops.
I had a superior single room which was on the third floor. Note that the lift only goes to the second floor and then there is a narrow staircase that winds round a corner up to the third floor. Not easy if you're a short person with a tall suitcase.
My room was lovely and airy with 2 windows. There is secondary glazing infront of the original windows so apart from a few sirens you hardly hear any noise from outside at night. The bed was a lot firmer than mine so be aware of that if you have back problems. You could get up aching a bit in the mornings.
My en-suite had everything I needed including toiletries but I did have trouble regulating the temperature in the shower.
My room also had tea/coffee making facilities, a wardrobe, desk and chair, bedside table, bedside lamp, soft towels, tissues, tv with all the freeview channels and they gave you biscuits each day when they restocked the tea and coffee. There is no central heating in the rooms due to the age of the building but they do provide plug in heaters.
Breakfast was lovely and was served in the cafe area which again is light and airy. If you book direct with them you get continental (cereal, toast, yogurts, pastries, fresh fruit and fruit in juice) plus you can choose cooked items from a menu. You can also have juices or tea/coffee. I did hear them say that if you book through booking.com you only get continental.
York is a wonderful city to wander around. Make sure you visit the tourist office on Parliament Street as they have loads of leaflets. I did the cat trail while I was there which was following a map and clues to find cat ornaments perched on the sides or window sills of building. Something fun for kids too.
Harrogate and Knaresborough are only half an hour by train from York station and are also well worth a visit.
