Basic but ok

This hotel was ok, nothing more. The interior does show its age and some amenities in the room could have improved the experience some (like soap and shampoo in the bathroom). For taller people the size of the relatively small beds might be a bother. The breakfast was ok but nothing more. Would not specifically recommend but ok for an overnight stay.

Our hotel in Ernst

On our trip following the Mosel we stayed in this lovely but older hotel, the owners are very friendly and helpful, we had a room with a view on the Mosel and saw some river boots passing.
The room was spacious and clean.

quaint family run hotel that I stumbled upon

My husband and I took a 2 week vacation in Germany with no set itinerary. We both had studied and Germany, know the country well and have seen the major sites so we decided to let the wind blow us wherever we felt like it. We prefer small German towns to large cities so I googled prettiest small towns in Germany and found Cochem, in the Mosel River valley and booked this hotel.
The hotel is located right on the river bank and there is plenty of free parking across the street. The room was clean, spacious and a great value, 75 Euro a night for a couple including breakfast. Even though there is no ac and we were there on the first hot day of the summer, the room was cool if you kept the window closed. The hotel is family run and the owners are very attentive. There is a restaurant at the hotel, but we didn't eat there as there weren't many non pork options on the menu. I wouldn't come here with teenagers as there isn't anything for them to do, but if you are looking for peace and tranquility, you can find it here. Truthfully, the only drawback is that there is no internet and even phone reception for our Vodaphone pay as you go plan is basically non existent in the village.
The hotel is in a tiny village in the outskirts of Cochem, a stunningly beautiful, fairy-tale like town. The village of Ernst contains hotels, wineries and restaurants all along the main street and that is about all. It is idyllic. Don't come here looking for pubs to hang out in all night. There isn't even a convenience store in town. The hotel is right on the river and there is a long walking path along the river as well as grassy banks that are ideal to sit in and consume the wine you bought in town. Right down the street there is a shop that rents bikes, which is the ideal way to see the river valley as it is completely flat.

Ok but rather dull.

As another review states this is a modest hotel. The nightly rate was $89/night for a double room with two twin beds together and a bathroom with shower. We stayed for 3 nights in late August 2014 during the Cochem wine festival. Our room was on the hotel's side but with the window open, we heard road noise and voices on the winegut deck next door. Room and bathroom were in very good condition, very clean, and the shower had good water pressure with very hot water.
Many of the hotel's 16 rooms are in the front facing the highway and the Mosel river with fewer rooms in the back and sides. Steep vineyards rise from the other side of the river. The owners live on site.
We do not speak/read German but were not informed of the information which was in the German information binder in our room. We did not realize breakfast was included with the room and missed it the first morning. The second morning we noticed the other guests were all older people. My husband said it felt like eating in a nursing home. Breakfast was various hard rolls, cold meats, cheese, fruits, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, with coffee and tea. It was a good breakfast especially to be included in the room price. We were also not told about a pass the hotels give for free bus passage to Cochem. We found out from other people at the bus stop. We always felt out of the loop in knowing what was available in the hotel and wonder what else we didn't know.
Another reviewer mentioned the hotel bottles its own schnapps and jams. We saw various bottles on a table in the dining room but were never told what they were. We did not eat dinner at the hotel.
My 4 star rating is due to both the lack of information from the hotel's owners who are the only staff we met and the 1970's decor throughout the hotel. An English version of the room information would have made our visit much better. Our bathoom fixtures were burnt orange with very dated floor and wall tile but in excellent condition. The dining room was very clean with multi-colored linen tablecloths but cluttered 1970's decor and in need of a make-over.There is also no Wifi which we needed.
The hotel is in Ernst, 4km from Cochem and is convenient to Cochem, Beilstein, and other mid-Mosel villages plus the castle, Burg Eltz. We drove to Trier for a day trip which was not easy due to the slow road along the river which passes through multiple villages. We tried using the autobahn one way but it was not quick to reach from the Ernst/Cochem area.
