Sicilian perfect cuisine without coperto
We accepted the invitation to the pizzeria's 15th birthday and reserved a table for dinner. We hadn't used the hotel. The restaurant, a typical Italian family restaurant, was already well booked. From the selection of Italian wines, we couldn't resist the Frascati. We had usually preferred it. Concentrating the rich composition of the pizza, including the seasonal ingredients of pumpkin flesh or with figs, Parma, rocket and walnuts, on one was a great challenge. We opted for the Black Forest Biss pizza and a baked Tris di Pasta.
The ambience was simple with little Italian flair; next to the salt and pepper shakers, a tea light flickered as a table decoration. The coperto was omitted.
The large pizza dough, which almost reached over the edge of the plate, was baked firm to the middle, almost crispy. On the thin dough was regional bacon, chanterelles, onions and the tasty Gorgonzola. It was an excellent, hearty Italian/German mix. The special knife made it easy to cut the pizza without any problems.
About the pasta: the ceramic bowl was burnt. The very well grated cheese covered the pasta and the strongly seasoned minced meat sauce. It was by no means the usual pasti (spaghetti and tagliatelle) that met the chef's liking, but the penne, gnocchi cooked al dente and the filled ravioli that gave the tripasta a special touch.
We were able to talk to the very nice boss about the missing coperto and had the impression of the hospitality and love of Italian cuisine that we were able to enjoy. A pleasant evening will remain in our memories. Congratulations on 15 years of pizzeria in Staufen.

Have forgotten us
We had a reservation and a confirmation for Christmas Eve. When we arrived, it was closed and no one was there. Neither ringing nor calling helped. They had simply flown out (the restaurant also said it was closed until January) and left us sitting there. Luckily, we found somewhere else locally.

Pizzeria is fab!
We didn't stay here as guests but were guests in a nearby campsite. We frequented Staufen often during our stay and finally found the pizzeria restaurant attached to Hotel Sonne. 6 of us ate pizzas (they serve a lot more!) and found them to be true italian-style, served by the Italian-German owner, very tasty and good value all round. Only wish we'd found it sooner during our stay.
Only negative is the toilets - no paper and a bit grotty!

A Decent Stay at a Decent Pricepoint
The Sonne is not for the traveler with high expectations of pampering or luxury. If it's luxury you seek, try the Lowen. As for the Sonne, it is a charming place for low-to-medium maintenance travelers. It has a quaint lived-in appeal, with obvious history to its planks and boards. The furniture is practical and sturdy, and while comfortable for its purpose is not overly appointed. The bed in my room was quite stout, but the bedding was soft enough for a good night's sleep, while chairs were folding chairs. I don't mind that kind of feature, as it's part of why it costs noticeably less than the classic hotels. But what the Sonne lacks in finery, it makes up for in tangible charms. The stained glass windows and heavy timbers are signs of the age of the building, and bring the visitor into a slight time warp, seeing the building's more aged grandeur as commonplace, and yet, timeless. The proprietor of the Sonne is a casual, friendly chap (Frederico) who looks- and when he speaks Italian, sounds- like a pasta chef who recently came over the Dolomites to run a BnB in the Black Forest, but he is a local, through-and-through.
He will hand you a room key to let yourself come and go when you arrive. The bill, and the minimal paperwork, only comes at the end of the stay. You will never find a more casual place to stay. The walls are thin enough to hear the coughs of tender cherubs who acquired a cough in nearby rooms, but I had no trouble getting to sleep, myself. If you are into simple and laid back accommodations with a homely appeal, then the Sonne is probably for you.
It is centrally located, and sits directly behind the local distillery, Schlaederer. So if you're looking for something besides wine or beer, you won't have far to go to find it, though in the off-season, distillery hours are shortened, just like all the other businesses.

nice hotel for a short stay
nice little hotel, has a few private parking spots free for guests. very nice owner. room and bathroom were pretty small, but definitely confortable enough. clean. basic breakfast but good, it was nice to take it in the small terrace out front. only problem was no air conditioning, but it's been unusually hot this summer, probably a/c is not generally needed here. and most family hotels don't have it anyways.
