Top family hotel

A super family hotel with excellent offers. From wellness, indoor playground, petting zoo or horse riding course, there is everything Kindrtn enjoys. The staff were all extremely friendly and accommodating. You are spoiled and there is nothing missing.

Not good

We had booked 3 nights with All-Inclusive Premium at the Ellus Resort, but we left after just one night because we were very disappointed.
For a supposed 4-star children's hotel, we expected significantly more. The facility resembles an older apartment block rather than a modern family resort. The apartment was also old and worn out and did not match the pictures or our expectations.
The swimming pool was new, but small, and there were hardly any play options for children. There was a small area for toddlers, but almost nothing for older children. The play barn was completely overcrowded, with parents and children practically stacked on top of each other. For the childcare, children could only participate with prior registration, which was not clearly communicated beforehand.
The food in the restaurant was okay, but really disappointing for a 4-star hotel. Overall, the whole experience reminded us more of a simple holiday park – even some Center Parcs offer significantly more for families and children.
The service was particularly disappointing. At checkout, we explained multiple times that we were leaving early due to our dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, we were later asked again if "everything was alright." In the end, we were even asked to leave positive feedback in the room booklet. To be honest, we did not feel taken seriously at all.
We often travel to children's hotels and therefore have good points of comparison. For us, the price-performance ratio is absolutely not right here.

Very disappointing for us.

The rooms or vacation apartments are modernly furnished and very clean. But unfortunately, everything was lacking. No soap and no shower gel, so we had to go buy some first. We have not experienced this in any other hotel, especially not for this price. In a 5-star family resort, one should be able to expect that. Unfortunately, we had a room at the very top of this old new building, and it had no elevator. It was always very laborious to climb, especially with a small child. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Since our locking system was not functioning upon arrival, we sought help from the cleaning staff, whom we encountered while climbing the stairs. They explained to us that the reception had not yet been activated, so we could not enter anywhere.
We had paid an additional €50 because we wanted to check into the room earlier. However, that also meant more walking for us, as the activation was missing for the other areas. So it meant going up and down the stairs again.
For us, many things were disappointing compared to other family hotels.
The food must match the price, which is far too expensive for this offer. As has already been correctly stated, it resembles a cafeteria offering. We walked around the tables and did not know what to put on our plates. Our grandchild felt the same way. The selection is limited, and the quality does not compare to other family hotels. A juicer was set up that one could use oneself. Unfortunately, we did not take any, as only old dark carrots were offered in the basket (for breakfast). The breakfast times were planned, but the reality looked different. It was like being in a train station hall. One could not reach any table, as there were lines with children that one could not get past.
For the rather high price, the food and what is offered to the children is far too overpriced.
Moreover, one had to pay extra for certain attractions. The horseback riding that was so beautifully offered was, of course, not free; one had to pay a hefty amount for that.
The wellness area is far too small. I do not know how the square meters were measured. We were disappointed by the small pool with the limited loungers. There was nothing offered to the children there, for example. Swimming aids, balls, or other items, as is available everywhere else.
The paths to the restrooms are far too far away, and one has to walk through cold drafts. This meant we had to change the child each time.
Why didn’t they place a few loungers on the terrace so that one could sunbathe and enjoy the surroundings?
I wanted to show my grandson the terrace, so I walked out with him. Unfortunately, that was a mistake, as the door could not be opened from the outside to re-enter.
We stood in the sun and had to knock loudly on the glass for someone to let us in. Fortunately, a lady came in and opened the door for us from the inside.
How can such a thing happen? What would have happened if this lady had not come to the swimming pool at lunchtime? Why can the door not be opened from the outside again? We were in complete panic there. Many things need to be planned differently here, as we noticed.
In the play area, I slid down the slide with our child because I wanted to test if it was really safe for him. It was so steep that I burned my buttock and the skin came off. I found it incomprehensible that in a hotel where children are present, there is no emergency station for injured children.
I was able to obtain disinfectant and a band-aid there with great difficulty, as there was no contact person available for that. The reception was overwhelmed when I first inquired about it.
Our conclusion is:
Those who value high-quality catering, well-thought-out room concepts, true all-inclusive services, and relaxation will likely be disappointed here. Not much is offered for children here, except for an ice cream voucher upon arrival.
Especially when comparing to other premium family hotels, the price-performance ratio does not match.
This time, we thought we would spend a bit more money to offer our grandchild something wonderful. But we were truly very disappointed.

Light but also lots of shade

We spent 6 days in the Superior Suite at Elldus Resort in March and would like to use this review to share our experiences.
In advance: We believe that the Elldus Resort can be both very fitting, but also very inappropriate for families – depending on personal preferences and expectations. We would therefore like to give future travellers some things that might be helpful when considering booking the resort.
What we felt good about:
- Size and facilities of the rooms (category Superior)
- Cleanliness throughout the resort (both in rooms and in public areas)
- Play barn incl. outdoor area (very nice and varied for children)
- Location (beautiful in the surroundings of the Fichtelberg – really idyllic both in snow and sun (we experienced both)
What we found in order:
- Restaurant as well as quality and choice of food
(You will always find something and especially for children the selection is very suitable. Unfortunately, the Buffett was often “grazed” and you could only follow up with the follow-up very delayed (sometimes not at all).
- Sauna area (has everything it needs – but is not overly chic or modern.)
What we did not like / want to criticize:
- Clairvoyance of the rooms
(This is our main criticism and at the same time the reason that would definitely keep us from coming back. The rooms are all located in very old blocks style GDR slab buildings. Noise isolation is de facto absent. You can hear every step, every door, every cough, sneeze, cry from the neighbouring rooms (especially the room above your own). The same applies if someone uses the hallway – which happens quite often, as about 10 rooms share an entrance and hallway and there is no elevator. We understand that this circumstance is difficult to change and is due to the structure – but unfortunately this is an absolute nightmare, especially for a family holiday with noise-sensitive children / sleepers. We were NOT able to sleep restfully (!) a single night, as every morning from 5:30 a.m. we got up above us and could no longer think of sleep).
- There are no elevators in the apartment buildings
(The resort communicates this transparently and we were also aware of it. We were “only” on the second floor and our child already runs stairs without any problems. So for us, only the transport of the luggage was uncomfortable. For families with smaller children, however, this means every time: Carrying a stroller downstairs to the basement (what do I do when I'm alone?!) and carrying child from the basement to the respective floor. Ascent is also a possible barrier for older people. Also here: We understand that this circumstance is due to the construction of the houses – but then these houses may simply not be suitable for a FAMILY (!) hotel.
- The apartment houses are not connected to the "main house"
(The hotel also communicates this circumstance transparently. Honestly, we didn't expect it to bother us so much in everyday life. In summer, the whole thing is certainly a little more relaxed – unfortunately not in late winter. We definitely prefer family hotels where you can simply stroll to the swimming pool in your bathrobe – without having to go several hundred meters through the cold, park your stroller somewhere, etc.)
- The swimming pool does not really offer much “action” for children at the moment (it is probably to be grown). There is a normal swimming pool with a depth of about 1.30m and a small “children’s area”. This consists of a small children's pool (advantage: This was always very nice and warm) and a family sauna. What is definitely missing are small (or even larger) slides or water features. Our 2-year-old had a lot of fun here – there could be a better offer for older children.
- “The little things”
Overall, we have lacked attention to detail here and there. There were no bibs in the restaurant (or we missed them). The servants at the table were tiny and counted. Towels had to be picked up on deposit and in fixed number at the reception (there are none in the spa / swimming pool in case you spontaneously need another / clean towel). On arrival or departure no present for children (only one bag of snacks from the cooperation partner - no cuddly toy or similar). The strollers that can be rented at the hotel were very limited and not always available. We know of other famililotels simply differently.
Conclusion: The Elldus Resort is certainly not a bad place and our boy also had a really good time overall. We therefore do not want to advise against booking the hotel – but we cannot recommend it without restrictions (hence the thumbs down). Whether the Elldus Resort is suitable for your own holiday depends very much on the expectations and aspirations of each family.
PS: We have already visited some famililotels (e.g. Habachklause, Post Family Resort, Sonnenpark Willingen). Compared to these hotels, the Elldus Resort already drops significantly – although the star rating (all 4*) and the price are not dramatically different (we were only at the Post Family Resort in January this year and can therefore compare very current prices – the difference is marginal). You just have to say honestly that in other places you get a lot more for almost the same money.
