Historic mansion in a very beautiful village
The villages of Chettinad are dotted with numerous mansions from the early 20th century, and the Visalam is a fine example, very well located in the village of Kanadukathan, one of the most beautiful. The building's architecture is a sort of Indian-style Art Deco. The rooms are located around a beautiful interior patio. There are different dining areas: a covered gallery in the garden for breakfast, a terrace next to the pool for lunch, and a restaurant upstairs for dinner. Good food. There is also a tea cart, open in the morning and in the late afternoon. Everything is well thought out down to the details, a beautiful experience.
There are free activities (walks in the village, etc.) and others that are paid (bicycle rides in the surrounding area). The staff is very friendly and welcoming.

Chettinad adventure
Visalam is a beautiful heritage property, spic and span rooms, extremely courteous staff. I loved my room which had Athangudi tiles and old teak furniture. I had a wonderful time exploring the surroundings on foot and on bicycle. Don’t miss out on this experience as one is accompanied by a local guide who knows more about the place than Mr. Google.

A wonderful place to experience the real Chettinad. Highly recommended!
An exceptional stay and one of the highlights of our trip through India. The property is beautiful, but what really makes Visalam special is the staff – everyone was incredibly kind, attentive and genuinely welcoming.
We highly recommend the tour of the surrounding Chettinad villages with Vanakkam, an amazing guide. He brought the history, architecture, local traditions and crafts to life and helped us truly understand the region.
And the food! Dinner at Visalam was honestly the best meal we’ve had in India so far. Authentic, full of flavour and beautifully prepared.
We highly recommend the tour of the surrounding Chettinad villages with Vanakkam, an amazing guide. He brought the history, architecture, local traditions and crafts to life and helped us truly understand the region.
And the food! Dinner at Visalam was honestly the best meal we’ve had in India so far. Authentic, full of flavour and beautifully prepared.

We recently stayed at Visalam, and it was hands-down one of the absolute highlights of our entire trip. If you are looking for an authentic, soulful glimpse into Chettinad's rich history, this beautifully restored mansion is the perfect place.
What made our stay so special:
The Vibe & History: The property has a gorgeous, quaint, and incredibly homely feel. Walking through the historic corridors of the mansion felt like stepping back in time, yet it maintained a warm, cozy atmosphere that made us feel instantly at ease.
Outstanding Dining: The food was spectacular—rich in local flavor, fresh, and prepared with so much care. The kitchen team was incredibly accommodating, gladly customizing and meeting all of our specific meal requests.
Going the Extra Mile: The staff at Visalam are easily among the best we have encountered on our entire travels. They are exceptionally warm and hospitable. A standout moment was when they enthusiastically joined and helped us organize a special celebration for my child, making it feel so personal and joyful.
A Special Mention for the GM, Manoj:
A massive thank you to Manoj, the General Manager, for personally curating such an amazing experience for us. He went out of his way to make sure every single member of our family was having a great time. His expert tips and recommendations for exploring local attractions were invaluable and helped us get the absolute most out of our visit.
What an amazing experience! We left Visalam with warm hearts and beautiful memories. We cannot recommend this heritage gem highly enough!
