One of the most unique hotel experiences I've had
What a unique, quaint and charming hotel! One can certainly feel the history in every meter of its 250-or-so years walls: It feels much like an oasis within the chaotic cacophony of Calcutta's urban heartbeat.
Every issue (not many, if I am being honest) I've experienced in this hotel was dealt with immediately and with the utmost concern for my comfort. Mr Debashish and Mr Chaterjee have been extremely accommodating, friendly and amicable, and Mr Jonathan does an excellent job managing the housekeeping staff (with kudos to Mr Govinda as well, though there many others I need to learn the names of, since everyone here is a personality and a decent one at that). I especially enjoy the easy convivial nature of the front desk staff, who all are big on personality.
The rooms are clean, though one must take into consideration that this hotel is OLD and thus it will not look polished, though I find that part of its historic charm. My room in particular was quiet and had minimal noise.
I feel comfortable enough here that I have renewed my stay at least twice over, and truly must give applause to the remarkable staff for making my stay a very comfortable one.
My only complaints are so minor, that I don't wish to detract a star for them, as they are more than made up for by the attentiveness of the staff and the comfort of the room:
* I wish there was FIFA available on the television;
* The refrigerator is a little small and isn't as cold as it could be
*You must remind them not to give you a wakeup call for breakfast (which I just interpret as them trying to make sure you don't miss it).
Overall I give this place 5 stars. It's one of the most unique hotels I've ever stayed at, and one I'm immensely enjoying the experience of every day I stay here.

Average rooms
We booked Double/Twin rooms at the ground floor during our stay in July 2026. The Hotel is old and there was musty smell in our rooms. Bugs and mosquitoes were also there and we had to ask for the repellent.
The upstairs walls plaster was coming out and needed painting and plastering.
The hotel needs renovation and upkeeping.
Overall experience is average.

The hotel is a heritage gem in the center on Kolkota. While it doesn’t boast the polish of a newer hotel, it checks the box on every comfort including AC, a beautiful upstairs sitting room full of historical photos and antiques as well as a lovely garden terrace to take one’s meals. The staff is gracious and attentive.

Nice old gem, but could be better
Heritage building with old English charm. That’s the reason I chose it. Handy location, the room & bathroom was very large. Luckily we had easy access to the large balcony as well. But the hotel needs a lot of repairs, painting & full makeover.
Food was great, restaurant staff were nice, but some restaurant hands lacked common training of bringing food to the room without or proper cutleries. We had to ask for it.
The reception staff were very friendly,polite and helpful.

Being a colonial building the rooms were large and reflective of the era with period furnishings. However, the building is in need of some renovation and looks a little shabby in places. The kitchen provides a good selection of delicious food but the menu would benefit from more snack options after a day of sight seeing.
