Ideal accommodations in a lovely town

My husband and I spent 2 nights in the Lighthouse Room at the inn and were very pleased. The stunning view of the harbor and lighthouse was everything we dreamed of. The bed and bath rooms were clean, comfortable and appealing. The caretakers were personable and helpful. A nice Continental breakfast is served in a lovely common room. We lucked out with beautiful weather and enjoyed lounging in the Adirondack chairs by the water.
It's an easy walk to the attractions and restaurants in town, and very close to the Alexander Graham Bell Historical Site. If you have the opportunity to attend a ceilidhs at St. Michael's Hall, don't miss it, it was a special highlight of our visit. It's best to reserve seats in advance since there wasn't an empty seat in the place.

Historic charm, Good location, Underwhelming Room

Good location, historic charm, but Room 3 is quite disappointing. It’s VERY tight for 2 people with luggage and does not have a pleasant view. The closet has an angled floor so you can’t store luggage in it. The bathroom is disconnected and you have to leave the room and go across the hall. The furniture is very dated. It does have a window air conditioner and ceiling fan, which is good since temps are warmer than normal but both are rather loud and distracting. Finding few pros to balance the cons to redeem the experience. The other rooms here might be nice but room 3 is not what we expected.

Great starting point for touring the Cabot Trail

Built in 1861, the Dunlap Inn is a small 5-room B&B located on the shores of Bras d'Or Lake in the Cape Breton Island town of Baddeck, NS. We stayed two nights in a second floor street-view room with a private bath (although there were some lake views out the side window in the room}. One important note: You must check-in at the Telegraph House about a quarter mile down the road to get your Dunlap Inn room keys.
Our room had a double bed and twin bed, two chairs and small side table. The bathroom, that was very likely a closet before it was transformed, had a toilet sink and decent sized shower, with a sliding pocket door for privacy.
Downstairs included a breakfast room and a bright common living room overlooking the lake with sliding glass doors that opened to a porch from which you could watch the activity on the lake and enjoy the view of Kidston Island and its lighthouse. One day, we actually saw a seal bobbing around in the lake, which they say is a fairly common sight. Outside, a grassy lawn gave way to a dock on the water offering comfortable Adirondack Chairs. Parking is available for 5 cars onsite.
The Continental Breakfast included, bagels, breads, fresh fruit, cheese, a baked item, hard-boiled eggs, cold cereal, granola, yogurt, juice and coffee/tea, and was served from 8-10am.
The village of Baddeck is fairly compact. From the inn you could take a 5-minute walk to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, which is worth a visit, and several restaurants and shops in town. Tom's Pizza was very good, as was the Highwheeler Cafe & Bakery with fresh baked goods and their own fresh-roasted coffee. The Main Street Restaurant and the Freight Shed are two full-service, sit-down restaurants with nice menus, although we didn't eat at either. About 15 minutes down the road are the Big Spruce Brewing Company (Eastern Canada's only on-farm organic craft brewery} and another great cafe called the Herring Choker Deli in Nyanza. Don't let the name fool you. The homemade sandwiches and baked goods were outstanding!
We enjoyed the inn and met some interesting people who were all there to experience the Cabot Trail. Definitely, a quaint, quiet place to spend a couple nights.

Lovely quiet B&B

We stayed here for one night and were very impressed. Check in at the neighbouring hotel was quick and easy. Our room was comfortable and well appointed and the breakfast was excellent.

Excellent waterfront option for staying in Baddeck

This place is a fantastic option in Baddeck. During our travels, we stay in all types of lodging. We're seeing more and more of this sort of place... a B&B feel, but not all of the frilly nature and hosts waiting on you hand and foot. The location of the Dunlop just can't be beat. It is right on the waterfront on a protected cove of Bras d'Or Lake. Not only that, it has its own private deck and boardwalk right on the edge of the water. The main pier is just a short walk away. There, you will find one of the best restaurants in town and a really great tour boat operator. If you walk out the front door, you're just blocks away from the middle of Baddeck. In addition, this inn has its own private gravel parking area right next to the historic building. The rooms and the entire inn have been updated very nicely, too. We stayed in the Garden Room on the second floor, which faces the street (but not the water). It was very clean, and the window A/C unit kept the room very comfortable. It was hot while we were in town with temperatures in the high 80's Fahrenheit. The shower in that room is a huge walk-in, and the sink is out in the corner of the very large bedroom. We definitely made use of the outdoor boardwalk and very nice Adirondack chairs. We watched the full moon rise right over the bay, which was loaded with anchored sailboats. The lighthouse is just across the water, too. Breakfast here is advertised as continental, but we really felt like it was quite a few steps above that. We had options of fresh drip coffee, hard-boiled eggs, toast, some fresh scones from the bakery down the street, yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, and I believe you could get cereal and milk as well. The dining space is very large, with room to spread out. The Alexander Graham Bell historic site and museum is almost straight across the street from the inn, too. I'd say that by far the best selling point of staying here is that you'll only have a max of 4 other couples staying in the other rooms, so you get a lot of privacy. The key is the waterfront location, with a patio and boardwalk that is private just to people staying at the Dunlop. If we return to Baddeck, we would absolutely stay here again.
