We used to love this place….
The Sandman Edmonton West has been our hotel of choice when visiting family over the past two years. The rates are reasonable, the rooms are fairly spacious, and the location is perfect for our needs. That said, we had noticed a decline in overall upkeep but still chose to book a three-night stay. Sadly, we regretted that decision from the start.
The common areas, including the halls, stairways and tower lobby, have become very scruffy, and the elevators were downright filthy. The mirrored walls and interior elevator doors were covered in handprints and drips. Judging by the buildup along the edges and in the corners of the elevator floors, it appeared that an edge-vacuum attachment had never been used.
Our first room on the fourth floor reeked of cigarette smoke, so we were moved to another room on the same floor. Unfortunately, the replacement room was not much better. The bathroom sink was cracked and completely plugged, requiring maintenance to snake it, and the bathroom door handle was broken. As a result, my husband became stuck in the bathroom the following morning. That was the last straw, and we decided to end our stay and move to another nearby hotel.
My husband spoke with the General Manager, who was very apologetic and refunded our night, which we appreciated. The GM explained that the hotel had been renovated more than four years ago and that things were beginning to show wear. We completely understand normal wear and tear. However, vacuuming corners, wiping walls and cleaning glass surfaces—including doors and tables—have nothing to do with when the hotel was last renovated.
We appreciate management taking our concerns seriously and refunding our stay. Unfortunately, the overall lack of cleanliness and basic maintenance was simply too much to overlook, and we will not be staying at this property again. I would recommend that the hotel’s leadership and cleaning staff tour the nearby Hyatt Place, which is approximately the same age as the Sandman’s renovations and is immaculate in comparison.
