Top hotel with minor weaknesses.

We stayed as a family with two children (10 and 12 years old) for several nights at the Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Iadera at the end of May/beginning of June 2026 and overall had a very pleasant stay with some highlights but also a few weaknesses.
From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed. The hotel offers a valet service, and in our room, there was a bottle of champagne and some small sweets as a welcome gift.
We had a Senior Suite Seaside, which we used as a family of four. The room was very tastefully decorated, generously sized, and featured a very nice bathroom and a huge balcony with a great view of the sea. However, one should know that the room concept is designed to be very open. Only the toilet is separated by a (relatively thin) door. The shower and other bathroom areas are only separated from the living area by curtains. This did not bother us, but for some family or travel configurations, it could be a bit unusual.
We particularly enjoyed breakfast and dinner in the main restaurant. The selection at breakfast was large, the quality of the food was very good, and the service was attentive. Dinner had a good concept: The first course was offered in buffet form, while the intermediate course, main course, and dessert were selected from a small menu that changed daily and were then served at the table. The quality of the food was consistently very good.
One evening, we dined at the Planika Steakhouse as part of the Dine-Around option. The location with a sea view is very nice, but the food did not impress us. As an appetizer, a mixed cold platter with cheese, sausage, and bread was served, which we did not find particularly high quality. For the main courses, there were two meat dishes and pizza to choose from. Unfortunately, the ordered steaks were not cooked as desired, the pizza was okay but not exceptional. However, the cheesecake for dessert was very good. We found it somewhat strange that only two portions with four forks were initially served for four people. However, after a while, the service inquired on its own whether we wanted two more portions. Nevertheless, this approach seemed somewhat unusual.
In contrast, the wine list in the main restaurant positively surprised us. The offered wines were of good quality and fairly priced from our perspective. Here, we felt that the price and quality matched well.
The hotel's garden area is beautifully designed, very spacious, and offers a lot of privacy. You can find quiet spots to relax everywhere.
We also greatly enjoyed the pool area. The large main pool is impressively big and was never overcrowded during our stay. There, one could easily swim laps or play ball with the children. Additionally, there are two smaller pools with bubble loungers and massage jets, one of which is filled with saltwater.
The spa area is exceptionally well-equipped for Croatian standards. There are several saunas, steam baths, a hammam, cold plunge pools, and various relaxation rooms. However, the area overall appears quite dark and somewhat confusing in places.
The pebble beach is located directly in front of the hotel. Due to its location on a peninsula, we had the impression that almost exclusively hotel guests were present there, making the beach quite empty. There are plenty of loungers available. However, the beach itself did not fully convince us. It is quite narrow, very stony, and slopes relatively steeply into the sea. There are only a few rocky entries into the water. Towards the neighboring Hotel Diadora, there is a small artificially created sandy beach, but it was noticeably more crowded there.
We were positively surprised by the fitness offerings. The fitness center in the hotel itself seems a bit smaller, but it made a good impression. We mainly used the fitness center located about 200 meters away at the Fortis Club. This facility is exceptionally large, excellently equipped, and resembles a modern commercial gym more than a hotel fitness room. It offers numerous cardio and strength machines as well as spacious training areas and was never overcrowded during our stay.
The offerings for children were less convincing for us. The hotel itself does not have any special offerings for children. Due to the representation as a joint resort, we initially assumed that the facilities of the sister hotel Diadora could be used without complications. However, we received different information regarding which offerings could be used and which were subject to additional charges.
Our attempt to book a session for the children at the large climbing wall in Hotel Diadora was particularly disappointing. Twice we were assured that someone would contact us by phone as soon as an appointment could be organized. However, neither of the callbacks ever occurred. Here, we would have wished for significantly better organization and communication.
We also view the additional costs for bowling and the game lounge at the Fortis Club critically. For a hotel of this category, we found it unnecessary that an extra fee should be charged here.
Another point that we found unfortunate was the bar offerings in the evening. From our perspective, the hotel lacks a truly attractive bar with a nice atmosphere and view where one can relax and wind down in the evening. Although there is a hotel bar, it does not offer particularly cozy seating or a nice view of the sea or the grounds. Unfortunately, the cocktails did not convince us either. Both the Aperol Spritz and the Piña Colada were poorly mixed. The Piña Colada was also served completely without decoration and appeared to be mixed amateurishly. The Aperol Spritz was very watery. Especially in a hotel of this category, we expected much more here.
We would particularly like to highlight that the management regularly went from table to table during dinner, inquiring about the guests' well-being and actively seeking feedback. He was exceptionally friendly, gave us helpful tips for our stay, and even provided us with a map of all the sports activities. Such personal commitment leaves a very good impression and shows genuine interest in the guests.
Conclusion: The Falkensteiner Iadera impresses mainly with its beautiful grounds, excellent pools, very good main restaurant, spacious spa area, outstanding fitness offerings, and friendly service. Despite the slight weaknesses mentioned (if possible, we would have preferred to give 4.5 stars instead of 5 stars), we would clearly recommend the hotel overall. In particular, the very good food in the main restaurant, the beautiful garden and pool landscape, as well as the relaxed atmosphere contributed to our very pleasant stay.

Excellent and Easy Family Option

Excellent family hotel for pool/ beach holiday. The leisure facilities are first class - huge gym/ tennis/ padel etc. Old town of Zadar is beautiful and 20-30 minutes by Uber/ Bolt approx 25 Euro. Our children took part in the Arsenal Development Football Camp which was exceptionally well organised and a great experience - great staff and facilities.

CELIAC DANGER: Total unpreparedness of the staff and continuous contamination

I stayed at this resort after explicitly asking during the booking process if the gluten-free food was safe. The response was a nightmare that lasted a week, causing me physical discomfort for which I am still paying the consequences today, four days after returning. The staff (both in the dining area and in the kitchen) has no idea what celiac disease or cross-contamination is. Here are the specific facts: Ignorance about allergens: In response to my request for information about the safety of the menu, a waitress asked me if I was allergic to nuts and concluded by saying, "the eggplant parmesan is vegetarian." Another evening, I was told that a "barley risotto" (a grain containing gluten) was safe. They continuously confuse gluten with sesame or other allergens. Widespread confusion: In almost every bar and restaurant in the facility, when the words "gluten-free" were mentioned, the employees showed total bewilderment and gave uncertain answers. The only positive note was a waitress from the snack bar who, showing at least some effort and common sense, would check and ask directly in the kitchen every time before responding to me. The rest of the staff was experimenting at my expense. Unlabeled buffet and shared tongs: The buffet labels did not indicate the presence of gluten or cereals (I have photographic evidence). Moreover, all cold cuts and sliced meats were taken with the exact same tongs, rendering any assurance meaningless. Even the croquettes were displayed without any indication. Contaminated dessert (a serious issue): A chef offered me a banana split assuring me it was gluten-free. The dessert was served to me resting on a crumble of traditional cookies. Fortunately, I immediately spat out the first bite, but the mistake is intolerable. Anxiety and forced fasting: I spent a week in anxiety, forced to order only salad, fish, or grilled meat to minimize risks. The facility is absolutely not recommended and dangerous for those suffering from celiac disease. There is no attention or training for the staff.
