Great location for Detroit Marathon Runners
My wife and I stayed here for the Detroit Free Press Marathon, and the location was right on point. The 9 mile mark was right outside of the hotel. We had a studio on the 9th floor which wasn't bad. The only problem we had with the room was there was a plate that wasn't fully clean, but everything else was fine. To note, the shower is very, very small. There isn't much room to move around in it.
After reading the reviews of about Sonder I had some mixed feelings before staying. Upon arrival it is just as people have said outside, there are a lot of homeless people around the area. There is a parking lot across the street with in and out privileges which was good. One thing that we did notice is that there weren't many restaurant choices close but we made do.
Overall, it was a good stay for the price and we will likely stay there again.

Gross and incompetent
Just say no.
I arrived at midnight and they didn't send me the code to get in beforehand (they even confirmed this was their mistake), and I didn't get into my room until after 3am.
Once inside, the place was a bit undercleaned (hair in the bathroom and such), run down, and appliances breaking.
I reached out about a refund and was turned down. Checked out after one night anyways. Gross.
Avoid this place, no idea why it has decent reviews.

Pluses & Minuses
I had a good experience at the Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy Gabriel Richard Apartments in Downtown Detroit. The location is good for travel —right next to the Michigan Station on the Detroit People Mover, making it easy to get around the city. Plus, it’s directly across the street from the Airport Express Coach, which was just $6 per journey when booked online.
The apartment itself was clear, spacious, and fully equipped. Having a washer/dryer, fridge, and a cooker made it feel like a home away from home. Everything was modern, comfortable, and well-maintained.
You’re within walking distance of Comerica Park, Ford Field, the waterfront, and the heart of downtown. And if you’re up for a short stroll, the Corktown area on Michigan Avenue offers a selection of bars and restaurants.
It’s worth noting that the immediate area outside the building can feel a bit sketchy, and it’s a spot where homeless tend to gather. While this didn’t affect my stay or safety, it’s something to be aware of when arriving. Detroit certainly doesn’t feel like the safest city I’ve ever visited, but I found people to be friendly and experienced no problems during my stay.

No. Just Don't
The key is would we stay here again. It's an emphatic no. No chance.
The hotel looks tired and needing some TLC from the outside. The rooms - ours was a 2 bed apartment - was very industrial/urben chic with the aircon, lighting strips all exposed. Rooms ×05 to x10 all face the main road - Washington Boulevard. Not the big problem. The area directly outside the hotel felt unsafe. The bus shelter and the sketchy people congregating there under Room 207 was the problem. We were in 207.
Noise, arguments, and music came from around the shelter and its prized seats in the daytime. Arguments and confrontations through the night.
It'll be interesting to see if the deli/grill on the ground floor helps or makes it worse when it opens. So shocked this was a Sonder and the image it is portraying for the Marriott brand. Stayed in Philadelphia previously, which was great, and currently in a Sonder in Chicago, which is excellent.

Way below our expectations
When we arrived, several characters were hanging around in the same street just metres away from the premises was a little unnerving.
The entry was much older than the photos. Hallways looked tired. The room was spacious, but we doubt if it was cleaned properly. Some towels had stains on. The floor was a little dusty. The bed was clean. Several mysterious light switches served no purpose. Thin rugs on the floor were a tripping hazard. The property was not well maintained. Walls were thin. We could hear our neighbours flushing toilets through the night. The only bedroom had no window.
If we knew what the actual condition was like, we definitely wouldn't book this place.
