Visiting Portland, especially via Amtrak, stay at The Society Hotel
I am going to be straightforward with you: if you are looking for rooms in this price bracket, you don’t get to be pretentious and boujee — you get what you get. Now, that being said, at The Society Hotel you get A LOT! I sure came in with a lot of apprehension, but this place delivers.
From the outside, this place is cute — old school, Old Town chic — and walking into their café/lobby and being greeted, I felt like a lil celebrity! The staff was kind and friendly, and even though I was exceptionally early and only expecting to drop my bags for storage, I was actually checked in and got to head to my space early, which was epic because I’d just come off a long train ride.
My private room was spacious, exceptionally clean, and had everything I needed. A private sink for hygiene, and even robes for shower time, which — although shared — was across the hall (2 to choose from) and legitimately big, bright, and clean. This shower and bathroom was bigger and cleaner than many in private homes I’ve visited. The showers had nice pressure and ample on-demand hot water, as well as body wash, shampoo, and conditioner dispensers.
I’m telling you, this place was hooked up. Everything felt new and renovated while keeping a deeply charming Old Town, old-hotel feel. The rooftop access is a step of modernity and seriously cool. Grab a coffee, snack, or adult beverage in the café/lobby and go up and enjoy the day and views of the city.
Now obviously, I didn’t stay in the bunks, but for $35-ish bucks and all these amenities, you know that’s worth it. I would absolutely stay here again, and I hope to. I’d also like to visit their other properties in Washington and Key West, FL.
Pro tip: bring flip flops or shower shoes — you should do that with any communal shower no matter how clean it looks! Also, take the stairway to the lobby at least once. They have a cache of old-school relics like newspapers and ancient artifacts from Old Town Chinatown Portland from a hundred years ago. It was a bonus surprise.
Last thing: you’re not going to miss the local Portlandians who are going through some stuff. Just know the café and lobby are locked and monitored, and the city of Portland and its residents — who are well or otherwise — from what I experienced, take care of one another. It was impactful to see and recognize that it’s not like interactions I’ve had in my own city of New York, or even in LA or other places. I felt, after a moment of “oh damn,” that I was in their community, and their fellow Portlandians had their backs, including the cops and other community services. We could all take note.
Anyways, long story short: there are locals enduring some hard times all around, but they aren’t going to bother you — so enjoy the wonderful, very cost-friendly accommodations at The Society Hotel, and enjoy one of the most interesting cities in the world.

Basic, but cheap
While reporting in Portland for pichonvoyageur.ch, I spent a night at this hostel-like Chinatown hotel. The bathroom was common upstairs, the bedroom equipped with a sink. Everything was very clean and the welcome friendly. It is especially the value for money that deserves the detour. The property sends a few formalities to complete when booking. A little picky. The neighborhood lines up some "homeless" tents, but I didn't feel insecure there, at least by day. Advantage: the extreme proximity to the beautiful Chinese garden of Portland.

Great service and friendly staff.
Incredible customer service. Such a rare thing in this day and age. We had to cancel our booking unexpectedly and response from the front desk was swift and their staff super friendly. Thank you We will definitely book here each time we visit Portland.

Interesting Place to Stay
Intrepid travelers who want a no-frills, low cost place to stay will appreciate the charm and character of this old hotel. Before booking, however, it is important to understand the levels of accommodation offered. People who stay in the hostel will sleep in one large room with dozens of bunks. Upstairs there are shared bathrooms and a cooking area. The next level is the private room with a shared bathroom, which they call a “standard” room. The shared bathroom situation reminded me of my college dorm. Each shared bathroom had one sink, one toilet, and one shower. I appreciated that the bathroom was so big that I just wheeled all of my luggage into the bathroom to take a shower and get ready! Guests who want a more typical hotel room with its own bathroom will need to book a “premium suite.” The lobby was very nice, with drinks and some food available from their cafe. It was there that I learned that those in charge of the hotel are making every effort to be green and preserve as much of the old building as possible with its original materials. I respect that but am concerned about the “old building smell’ emanating from the third floor hall. This smell could be indicative of problems such as mold, mildew, or decaying materials. The hotel is located in Old Town and Chinatown. It is close to Union Station, the very famous Powell’s bookstore that takes up an entire city block, some very beautiful Chinese gardens, and a stop for the inexpensive and efficient MAX light rail that can quickly take you to another, more desirable location in Portland and environs. I would highly recommend this hotel to my friends who have backpacked across Europe and bicycled across the Sahara Desert. I personally would not take children to stay in this area of Portland. The Society Hotel is an interesting and memorable place.
