What a beautiful hotel and so centrally located! The room and bathroom were beautiful. We will definitely return in the fall!

Fabulous Stay
Could not recommend the Oakdene Inn enough. An absolutely lovely experience. The inn and property is exceptionally beautiful and well maintained, modern yet still holding onto its classic features and charm. The bed was SO comfortable, felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. Amenities are great, an eye mask was provided, which was such a nice surprise. We stayed in the Commonwealth Suite and it was so nice having the extra sitting space and private porch - would be perfect for a couple with a couple kids, or if you are working remotely and need a separate space. Walking distance to downtown. The managers were easy to communicate with and very responsive. Have already recommended to numerous people, and will continue to do so.

Couples Trip
Upon checking in at The Historic Inn at Oakdene, we discovered it is a self check-in property with no on-site guest services. That was not necessarily a problem, but it is something guests should be aware of ahead of time.
After getting to our room, we found that the YouTube TV was not working, the bathroom heat did not work, and we encountered three bugs. I am in the pest control business, so the bugs did not particularly bother me — but my wife felt differently. After finally reaching someone by text, they did send a staff member out while we were at dinner. They reset the TV (although later we received a message stating too many TVs were connected to the YouTube TV account), placed a small heater in the bathroom, and said they addressed the bug issue.
The room itself was average in size, clean aside from the bugs, nicely decorated, and the mattress was very comfortable. Adding two comfortable chairs would be a great improvement.
The common area includes a pool table, snacks, a microwave, water, and coffee. Coffee is also available in the rooms. Water pressure was excellent, though it did take about a minute for the hot water to reach the second floor.
Overall, there were some positives — particularly the comfort of the bed and the water pressure — but the maintenance and service issues made the stay less enjoyable than it could have been.

Will Not be Back
Beyond disappointing! The outside of the inn looks tired. The inside of the end also feels like it needs some love and it definitely has the smell of being an older building. The first thing we encountered was a TV that would not work, a heating unit that barely put out heat, and no way to operate the strip heat that was in the bathroom. Since this is a “staffless”establishment -needless to say getting someone to respond in a timely manner is just something that’s not going to happen. We paid over $700 for a two night stay and this establishment is definitely not up to those standards.

No soul. It needs staff
A Classic Victorian, a century-plus old, Oakdene Inn leaps, at night radiates, from a bend in Staunton, Virginia's mansion-lined East Beverley Street. We parked in front and hiked deep stone stes to welcoming double doors. But the knob allowing us into vestibule wouldn't budge. We spotted a keypad to tap in a personal, four-digit code, sent to our cell phone, to grant us access to the inn for our three-day stay. Miss-typed, the code flashed a red X, denying us entrance. Typed again, a green check let us in.
But no one greeted us. There was no front desk, no one in sight across the whole vast lobby. Our keypad sent us the glorious Queen Anne Suite, the only room of eight on the first floor. Without elevators, the other has two and three flights of stairs, a blessing for our age-ravaged knees.
Oakdene marks the latest leap, launched largely by Air B&Bs, in what the hotel calls "staffless" services and "contactlesscheckin." Keypads, cell phones and codes have displaced clerks, waiters and maids, bartenders and cooks. We made our beds. We fluffed up our linens. We didn't pay tips.
Oakdene compromises. In a sitting room off the lobby, they offer "breakfast" they call "snacks." No bacon or eggs." Along a self-service counter you can brew your own coffee and tea, find blueberry muffins, ice, a microwave, and a little fridge with small cups of ice cream. "It's all free!" management promises."
The hotel has some glitches. We didn't have a dresser. We arrived with two suitcases but were allowed only one folding luggage rack. For all our space, we didn't have a dresser. We stuffed laundry into the room's two vanities' cubby holes. Most of our tall elegant windows had survived 130-some years with their old hardware intact. But when our air conditioning lagged, just one window would open. For reading, a suitable upholstered chair wobbled. It had lost the bottom inch of a leg.
We paid about $1,000 for our stay at Oakdene. For space, style, views, serenity, with patience with two flights of stairs, it needs the soul of some staff. But we would be tempted to try it again.
