A must!
A bonus with it being a more cost efficient choice as well.
When we arrived on a snowy Christmas Eve, we were met with the beautiful architecture of a traditional style building, steep stone steps leading up to a warmly lit wooden door... and a Christmas tree sparkling with lights in the window.
We then let ourselves in with the code that was sent via email to us prior to us arriving.
The lobby was warm and homely, books and games to borrow and classical jazz and Christmas music softly playing on a Robertson style radio.
A beautifully cared for wooden stairs with a carpet runner lead up ahead in front of us. It is a shoe free home, so we removed ours and left them at the front door.
When we got to our room, a lovely hand written name tag was on the door so I knew exactly which room was the correct one.
The music was softly playing in our room also when we stepped in, and the room was just beautiful.
Despite it being a shared bathroom, it was always free and spotless. Heated flooring made it cosy and the water pressure was amazing.
René was lovely and very kindly on our last day let us relax in the lobby as our flight was cancelled and we had to catch another flight.
Would highly recommend.
Also Phoebe the cat is a cutie.

A Complete Lack of Compassion or Reasonableness: Avoid this Establishment
We had booked the Thelonious Monk room at the Harlem Flophouse and were genuinely looking forward to our stay. However, two weeks before our trip, I suffered a serious fall that left me unable to walk and requiring surgery. This wasn't a change of plans due to finding a better deal or simply changing our minds—I was physically incapacitated and facing a medical procedure. Ten days before our scheduled arrival, I contacted Mr. Calvos to explain the situation. I understood their 14-day cancellation policy, but this was clearly an extraordinary circumstance—a textbook force majeure situation. The property isn't ADA accessible, and I had no physical way to reach the room in a wheelchair even if I had attempted to travel post-surgery. Rather than showing even a modicum of understanding, Mr. Calvos repeatedly insisted this was "my fault"—as if I had deliberately injured myself to inconvenience his business. He flatly refused any refund or accommodation whatsoever. The complete absence of empathy was startling. We're not talking about cold feet or a scheduling conflict; we're talking about a medical emergency that made travel physically impossible.
The Bottom Line: While policies exist for a reason, any hospitality business worth its salt understands that true emergencies warrant exceptions. The rigid, callous response I received reveals everything you need to know about how this establishment values its guests. When you book here, understand that you're rolling the dice—if life throws you a curveball, you'll find no compassion on the other end of the phone. I cannot in good conscience recommend the Harlem Flophouse to anyone. There are countless other accommodations in the area run by people who understand that hospitality means more than just collecting payment—it means treating guests like human beings, especially when they're facing genuine hardship.
Save yourself the risk and book elsewhere.
