Three weeks before my departure, the conflict erupted with Iran and Middle-Eastern airspace was closed. The flight I’d booked on Qatar Airways to Greece via Doha was canceled.
My wife had booked refundable fares several months before our trip, when we were still finalizing details. Once we bought our tickets and it was a sure thing we’d be going to Greece, she re-booked all our accommodation, including our stay at Caldera Senses as non-refundable.
Then this conflict happened. There was no way, at that point, we could get to Greece affordably. I contacted the hotel three weeks before our departure to ask if they would allow us to cancel our non-refundable room, as this was a special case. I sent the hotel my request along with proof of our flight cancelation.
Their response is worth reading, so you can get a true sense of Caldera Senses.
“We are truly sorry to hear that you may not be able to travel due to the current war situation and the airport closures in your area.
We completely understand how difficult and stressful this situation must be for you.
However, we would like to inform you that Greece has not been affected by these events.
Nevertheless, unfortunately, we are unable to proceed with a refund of your reservation, in accordance with our cancellation policy. One day after your scheduled arrival date, you could ask from the platform that you have made the reservation, all the necessary documents so that you may submit them to your travel insurance company.”
No travel insurance would cover us under these force majeure events, so I thought Caldera passing the buck to insurance was a copout. I tried to reason with the hotel, not even asking for a full refund.
Their follow-up is worth quoting as well:
“Reservation policies exist in order to be respected, not ignored. As a gesture of good will, we would like to offer you a good discount on a future reservation.”
We’d also booked our Qatar Airways flight as non-refundable. According to Qatar Airways’ official policy, we wouldn’t be entitled to a refund. I quite understand how policies must be adhered to during normal times. It’s during the ABNORMAL times when you get to see the true colors come out. This hotel wouldn’t offer us ANY of our money back or even a credit we could use within the year.
Keep in mind, this was not a last-minute cancelation, where the hotel would not have had the time re-rent our rooms. Boil down all their flowery words and I get: “We don’t give a s—t.”
The hotel itself may be very nice, but wouldn’t you prefer to spend your money with businesses that back up their messages of concern, using the typical phrases of “we completely understand” and “we are truly sorry”, with actions that prove they mean what they say?
Trip.com was more understanding and gave us some small credits for future purchases when they didn’t have to. THAT is a gesture of good will.

Bear in mind, you have to contact the hotel manager around one hour before your arrival, as there was no reception desk, you have to meet up the concierge from other hotel as I think this was one of their group hotels.
The hotel reception lady Mrs.Giota was lovely, provided many information to us, quick response, efficient.
The house with good view no matter day or night. With 15 minutes can reach 3 Bells, loads of restaurants, cable car station. Close to public bus hub with 6-10 mins walk up.

I strongly believe a lot should be improved - beautiful view to sunsets is not all today !
Apart from exceptional view, room tidiness and very helpful George - this hotel offers nothing ! No breakfasts - ok, we knew it, but also no alternative catering offer. Table water and coffee capsules only for first day. Tap water is not recommended for drinking, even locals admit it! Some guests are welcome with fresh fruits and wine, some not, we did not deserve it - explanation of hotel manager to this - below reasonable acceptance. We had permanent problems with air-condition which operated for some time after hard reset of electricity then it stopped ... during our 8 days stay nobody could fix it, after 3 attempts I stopped complaining.
WIFI is a DISASTER !! it cannot face any video transmission ... hotel manager Giota has a strategy to make you an idiot who has poor equipment and should know that internet works in Santorini generally poorly ... This is not true !! - I have checked it in several restaurants and also had to buy internet at local mobile operator COSMOTE - and it worked fantastic.

Stunning but needs plunge pool!
Mrs. Artemis was really nice, answered any queries quickly on Whatsapp...
I was with one other adult and 3 teenagers...the house was lovely but in some areas paint peeling off the walls and the bathroom was tiny.
The upper terrace was huge and lovely but pretty much wasted...no shade and I didn't see anyone using it...they should really make a plunge pool up there.
Location brilliant..right in the middle of everything and walking distance to any pick up point.Housekeeping excellent, everyday. Overall I would recommend .
