Ssshhhh …. This place doesn’t really have exiist, ok?
It was like stepping into someone’s personal home that Murni has lovingly curated over 40 years. Not centred on the typical paying tourist, staying at Murnis is homely. Our one bedroom apartment featured Balinese style and artwork, a logical clean bathroom with proper hot water and a relaxing outdoor terrace. Best of all, this place actually had ceiling fans, which (as an Aussie used to humidity) I’ve been wanting my entire trip in Bali! Clean, comfy and stylish.
And I’m certain there were other guests, but it was so quiet all I could hear was the tranquil water features on the grounds below.
Best of all, one of Bali’s best day spas is located here - highly recommend the hot stone body massage. Also, Murni also runs a top quality warung down the road which you can order from - great food at a great price! If you decide to eat at Murni’s Warung it is a shirt stroll down the hill and has a brilliant location on many levels. We had breakfast on our terrace twice which was so lovely. Another positive is that because the hotel is located above the main road it is easy for drivers to park and collect you if you decide to get transport.
If you get the chance, dont miss reading through the guest information folders as not only will you get information about things to do nearby (walks) but also see just how extensive Murni’s business sims have reached I to the heart of Ubud.
Murnis is probably not for the young crowd, but perfect for the older traveller, romantic couples, and long term stays. I cannot wait to return one day!

★★★★★ A Hidden Sanctuary in the Heart of Ubud
My time at Murni's Houses turned out to be one of the highlights of my visit to Bali.
From the moment you arrive, the property creates a sense of peace and serenity. The lush jungle surroundings, traditional Balinese architecture, carved teak details, peaceful pathways, and flowing water features all blend together beautifully. Extraordinary statuary, antiques, and art pieces collected by Murni over decades are thoughtfully placed throughout the property, giving every corner its own sense of discovery and character. The entire atmosphere immediately slows you down and makes it easy to disconnect.
Located just a short walk from central Ubud, Murni’s somehow manages to feel completely removed from the chaos of town. After stepping through the entrance, the noise disappears and you’re surrounded by the sounds of birds, flowing water, and the jungle.
The staff were warm, gracious, and genuinely welcoming throughout my stay. My room was uniquely Balinese in character, comfortable, and full of charm rather than feeling like a generic resort. The private terrace overlooking the grounds was an added bonus and became one of my favorite places to simply sit, relax, and take in the peaceful atmosphere.
Having the spa on the property was also a wonderful convenience. Both massages I had during my stay only added to the overall sense of relaxation and tranquility that defines the entire experience at Murni’s.
Another wonderful touch was being able to order food directly from Murni's Warung, located just down the road, and have it delivered either to the beautiful open-air veranda and lobby area or directly to my room. The meals I had there captured the flavors of authentic Balinese cuisine beautifully. It also adds another layer of history to the experience knowing that Murni’s Warung, opened in 1974, was the very first restaurant established in Ubud.
One of the absolute highlights was having the opportunity to meet Ni Wayan Murni herself — a true Balinese legend whose contributions to preserving and sharing Balinese culture are remarkable. Sitting down over tea and her famous fried bananas while listening to stories about Bali was an experience I’ll never forget.
This is not the place to stay if you want giant pools, loud beach clubs, or sterile luxury. This is the place to stay if you want to actually feel Bali.
Murni’s Houses feels less like a hotel and more like a peaceful cultural retreat hidden inside the jungle.
Highly recommended for travelers seeking authenticity, tranquility, and genuine Balinese hospitality.
