Food for the soul
We made the trip from the Garden Route to Waterfall Farmstay and were pleasantly surprised.
If you like the quiet, endless dry hills of the Karoo and enjoy a farm atmosphere, then Waterfall Farmstay is for you. The hosts were lovely, warm people that almost felt like family after our three days of staying there.
We stayed in Schoemanshuis- an delightful self catering, old historical cottage but well equipped with everything you need. If you can appreciate the simpler things in life and enjoy rustic, charming accomodation then the cottage is perfect.
If you like modern conveniences, please look elsewhere...this place is an peaceful escape from the world where we gazed stars, drank some wine around our fire and drew our focus back to the simpler things in life- a great distraction from our otherwise hectic and fast paced lives.
We liked the slightly remote location of the farm- about 30kms on a good dirt road from the N9, and the drive in and out was beautiful although a little bit timely...this we didn't mind as we were in no hurry anywhere.
Some great things to do in the area include a day trip to Nieu-Bethesda, and a picnic in the Valley of Desolation.

At the end of the world, worth it all the way
On our way down to Plet we decided to stay on a farm outside of Graaff-Reinet. It is in the Camdeboo National Park, 27 km of relatively good gravel road. When you arrive it feel like you are at an oasis!
Great walks, accommodation simple but nice and a bird paradise.

Misleading and and unsafe!
Location is remote but pretty. Owner was friendly on arrival but did not show us any other facilities/make any further suggestions.
The photos on TripAdvisor are completely misleading, we didn't stay in anything resembling them.
The unit "Chalet" looked like it hadn't been opened up in some time, there was a layer of dust over everything, including all dishes which we had to was upon use. As there is no ceiling nor insulation in the unit which contravenes the building regulations including SANS 10400 and is currently ILLEGAL to use. The unit was full of insects which is fine in some instances but due to no ceiling, there was an excessive number of spiders including two large scorpions found in the "main" bedroom. We couldn't keep any windows or doors open in this already badly insulated and ventilated unit.
All windows were closed upon arrival and due to no insulation, the unit felt at least 10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature which was in excess of 30 degrees C upon arrival. All furniture is mismatched and there is no covered outdoor area to sit and entertain.
The Chalet was positioned directly next to the local staff accommodation, which we found to be disturbing in terms of noise and security.
The Chalet was originally constructed as staff accommodation which had merely been refurnished.
The Add indicated a swimming pool which we are yet to see.
The Add says its 24 km from the centre of Graaff-Reinet, however, the exact distance to the centre of town is 35.7km?

Stop over
What a lovely place to stay over. Friendly reception, warm hospitality and rustic setting. Beautiful hikes also to a waterfall (dry at moment) pray for much rain for these farmers! Clean and lovely decorated.

Drive into the Koppies and Far Away
I seek out farm stays because it is all about the authentic experience of farm life. Added to that, having to get to the farm driving gravel roads for kilometers means that you can really get away from town life and commercial destinations. The farm accommodation was quaint and the atmosphere was one dating back to the early 1900's. The decor was distinctly positioned to add to the atmosphere and collectables and antiques were everywhere! Being able to interact with the farm animals was a plus and the owner was friendly and chatting to him about the history of the area and the farm over the braai fire made the experience homely.
