Day trip

Thoroughly enjoyed our day trip. Our ranger Kent was awesome, he made us laugh so hard. We had so much fun with him and learnt a lot. Didn't get to see the lions or elephants though. We stopped at their lapa in the middle of the safari where we got to enjoy the view of kariega river and the safari over some drinks. It was fabulous.

Greetings 'Mmina-thoko'
We're very happy to hear that you had a fabulous fun Day Trip with your Guide - hope you made memories to last you a lifetime!
I'm sorry to hear that you missed the Eles & Lions - what a great pity - but you did at least enjoy our beautiful scenery at your drinks stop at one of our spectacular viewing sites!
We hope that one day you'll be back & that those two elusive members that you missed, make up for not having been visible this time around.
Wishing you a joyful Festive Season.
Carol & the Sibuya Team.

Spectacular Scenery, Shockingly Poor Service

If you're only interested in wildlife and scenery, Sibuya delivers. But if you're expecting a well-rounded 4-star experience—including food, hospitality, and comfort—you may want to look elsewhere.
I'm originally from South Africa and planned a 4-star safari as the highlight of our trip to visit family. After comparing multiple game reserves, we chose Sibuya based on glowing reviews and recommendations. The bush lodge was 'booked' (later discovered it was under renovation), so we opted for the forest camp, trusting that the price would reflect the quality. Unfortunately, while our ranger and game drives exceeded expectations, nearly every other aspect of our stay was a disappointment—and ultimately led us to leave a day early.
What Went Well
Our ranger, CJ, was phenomenal. Knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging, he made each drive memorable. We saw four of the Big Five in their natural habitat.
Game drives were intimate and personal, especially on the first day and a half when we were the only guests.
Forest camp cabins were cozy and bug-free during the winter season.
What Undermined the Entire Experience
Food & Beverage Failures
The “complimentary” bar was never staffed. Getting a drink often felt like an intrusion rather than an amenity.
Morning coffee was a self-service station with dirty pots, old grounds, and missing essentials like sugar. Staff were absent, so we cleaned it ourselves.
Our request to take a wine bottle to the table was denied for unclear reasons—yet no quantity limit was enforced.
Meals were abundant but uninspired: burnt meats, repetitive dishes, and a bizarre absence of local staples like mielie pap. Even the milktart felt like a failed imitation.
To our disgust, the same salad that was swarmed by flies on Day 1 appeared again on Day 2.
Substandard Service
The staff—especially our host—were often missing or glued to their phones.
Reasonable requests (like lighting the cabin fireplace in winter) felt like too much to ask.
Our room was superficially cleaned (the bed was made) but lacked fresh drinking water and a clean bathroom.
When we reported a leaky kayak to management, it was met with a chuckle instead of concern.
Ambience Undermined
Sibuya marketed itself as an immersive wilderness escape, but the illusion was shattered by the sound of chainsaws, hammering, and loud chatter from ongoing construction.
Piles of renovation debris surrounded the lodge. One stack of wire fencing sat exactly where guests disembarked from game trucks—unsafe and unsightly.
Departure & Aftermath
The contrast was jarring when new guests arrived: suddenly, the coffee station was clean and stocked, cereal appeared before the game drive, and a new host was introduced. It was clear standards could be met—but we were already too fatigued, hungry, and frustrated to continue.
When we voiced our concerns to the manager (Chris), he offered no resolution beyond saying he’d speak to the team. We were refunded for our shortened stay, but the damage had been done.
Following up by email, Sibuya issued a generic apology—but dismissed our more serious complaints. They denied re-serving the salad and insisted we “enjoyed our stay,” which felt dismissive and tone-deaf.
Bottom Line:
Sibuya offers breathtaking scenery and stellar wildlife, but don’t let the glossy reviews fool you. Our experience was plagued by absent service, poor food, construction disruption, and a management team unwilling to make it right. A safari should leave you in awe—not desperate to leave early.

Greetings again ‘Gregelectrics’
Thankfully, our stunning scenery, ‘phenomenal ranger’ & game drives ‘exceeded expectations’ but unfortunately, other than that, you paint a very unsatisfactory picture which is highly regrettable & is extortion without the necessary insights. It appears that you were looking for a complete refund for your three day stay & that this Review is in retaliation. Despite your threat to besmirch our reputation & discredit positive reviews on all social media platforms, we were not prepared to succumb. You received a refund for the day you left early to take up an offer of accommodation with local family which had suddenly become available.
However, despite your clear retaliation, I have addressed your points below.
My response to your initial Survey follows, which in your opinion reflects ‘a management team unwilling to make it right’… this I contest. I’m not sure what you expected should have happened - beyond what’s stated below & additionally the refund you requested - & received.
Below is a excerpt from my letter to you, in response to your initial complaint - which you claim to have been ’generic’…which I can vouch for was not except for reserve news.
‘We’re extremely concerned at your exceptionally poor rating for Forest Camp. We’ve never had a zero rating in over 20 years of having been in business. We do our very best to give our guests an informal but informed & personalized adventure, so we’re concerned that you had so many negatives in your Survey. On having consulted with the staff & management of the Camp there seems to be some confusion re the mixed messages they received from you. Chris, the Manager, maintains that when asked, you indicated that you were enjoying your stay - except for the noise level while you were resting. We do most sincerely apologise for the fact that you were not notified that there were renovations in progress - a regrettable oversight. We’re sorry that you saw fit to leave a day earlier & hope that you received your refund as agreed.’
Your response to my letter: ‘Thank you for your message and for acknowledging our concerns. We appreciate the effort to follow up, but we remain disappointed by the disconnect between our experience and the reputation Sibuya has earned.
Being told we could not serve ourselves, yet rarely being served, left us constantly chasing down staff for the basics—water, coffee, wine.’
In answer to your substantial list of ’Failures’:
‘Being told we could not serve ourselves, yet rarely being served, left us constantly chasing down staff for the basics—water, coffee, wine.’
Water/coffee: On arrival you both received complimentary re-fillable aluminium water flasks & were asked to fill these at will in a central ‘watering station’ in the Camp because being an eco -reserve we minimize the use of plastic water bottles in an effort to reduce pollution. In our tents there are always glass water flasks, which are replenished daily. You were therefore able to help yourselves to water at any time as required.
It is not possible that you were told you ‘could not help yourselves’ as there are coffee/tea stations available in all tents & one in the communal lodge area, so you were able to serve yourselves at any time. You were offered a flask of boiling water after dinner to be delivered to your tent to be able to make your own hot beverages that night or in the morning & this you turned down…instead, you must have visited the general station in the main lodge before it had been prepared for use in the morning – hence the coffee plunger which had not yet been cleaned (but there are always actually a few available). The sugar is automatically removed from the station at night because the monkeys come in & do damage by stealing the consumables. This station is unmanned but always available for guest’s convenience.
The bar: You’re correct in saying the bar wasn’t constantly staffed as we don’t anticipate guests always requiring it, so it doesn’t warrant a staff member manning it all day, but you were advised on arrival that you were welcome to help yourselves at any time as drinks are complimentary & thus freely available. Without being intrusive, staff are constantly around & readily available to oblige. The Manager himself told me he chatted to you & that he himself had poured you wine in the bar area.
Meals: We take exception to the fact that you insist the salad was recycled - any leftovers from guest’s meals are consumed by the Camp staff. We pride ourselves on sourcing local produce & while unpretentious, our quest is that meals are fresh & tasty with an African twist & general appeal & we have many compliments to our credit. Our menus run on an eight-day cycle so I’m not sure how in two days, you can claim the meals were ‘repetitive’. ‘Burnt meats’ – cooked on a traditional South African braai - you should have recognised. Just for your information, our traditional milk tart recipe is the one most requested by guests! Mielie pap & chakalaka are on our menu - but apparently not while you were with us. We fully accept that everyone is entitled to their opinion as tastes vary & it’s regrettable that meals were not to your liking. The other guests who were staying at the same time as you gave us a full house rating for their stay & commented in their Survey foot notes that ‘the food was – delicious’. In our pre-arrival comms, we do request that guests let us know if they have dietary requirements & we do our best to comply. Maybe this would have been the way for you to go.
Tents: These have netting over all openings so are ‘bug-free’ in both winter & summer. Tents are serviced twice daily so I dispute your claim that only your bed was made! Fires in the tent are always prepared but not automatically lit because not all guests want a fire.
Leaking kayak: All of these were checked after your complaint & none were found leaking. There is a plug in them which when taken out assists with stability & this lets in a small amount of water. It’s possible that this is what you considered to be a leak. The Manager disputes that he was laughing at you – he was laughing with you over the fact that you told him you were having trouble stabilising the kayak.
Renovations: ‘Piles of debris surrounded the lodge.’ You intimate that the Camp was a shambles which is not true – there were materials either being delivered or removed so this would have been a temporary situation & not one where debris was left lying around being an eyesore.
You received a substantially discounted rate - a winter special - because during the quieter months it’s possible to do renovations. I however reiterate the apology in my original communication - that you were not informed.
Bottom line: Never have guests departed feeling ’fatigued, hungry, frustrated & desperate to leave’…

An unforgettable honeymoon at Sibuya River Camp

Our stay at Sibuya Game Reserve River Camp was truly out of this world — an experience like no other! From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel so welcome and special.
Our guides, Matt and Jay, took us on game drives that were nothing short of extraordinary. Their knowledge, passion, and sense of humor made every moment memorable. Matt’s incredible insight into the wildlife and environment taught us so much, while the rapport between the two of them brought endless laughter and fun to every outing. We were lucky enough to see a variety of animals including bf most of the big 5— all so close it took our breath away. Watching the sun set with delicious snacks and drinks each evening was simply magical.
The food and service at River Camp were exceptional. Chris, Hannah, and the team went above and beyond — every meal was a delight, and every detail was handled with such care and warmth. As honeymooners, we were touched beyond words when they surprised us with an intimate three-course dinner set up beautifully in our lodge. It was such a thoughtful and romantic gesture that we’ll never forget.
Sibuya River Camp truly exceeded every expectation — a perfect mix of adventure, luxury, and heart. We left with full hearts, big smiles, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Near perfection!

This was by far the highlight of our trip and near perfection! Everything was taken care of and people were friendly, proactive and interested. After a game drive you would be greated by the hostes with a drink. During game drives they would bring drinks and snacks. Diners were abundant and good, lodges would be warmed for you upon arrival. Defenitly worth every penny.

TOP EXPERIENCE !!!!

If I may recommend something this is definitely the place to be in South Africa. My sister and I were extremely impressed with our entire stay. We stayed there for 2 nights and were allowed to do 4 safaris with as "REERCE" as our guide. TOP GUY . He knows an answer to all questions whether it is about animals or plants.
I certainly don't want to forget the other staff, Nicolas from Belgium, Taylor and Mimie the managers of the kitchen. And the whole team.
We are extremely grateful to everyone
