Not as good as last year
We stayed here last year and i gave it a 5 star review as we had an excellent stay, so good that we booked again for this year.
The hotel is under new ownership and i feel standards have dropped since last year.
Still the same - great location, 45 minutes from the airport. Close to Paarl and Franschoek with lots of wineries, restaurants nearby. Great golf course on site. Lovely spacious rooms. Choice of two good swimming pools. Sushi still great.
Changes. Hotel now has a separate entrance from the rest of the resort and feels disconnected. Breakfast choices in main restaurant are menu only and narrower than before. No fruit available. Would prefer a buffet. Back’s restaurant in hotel area offers different choices but it is closing so staff were worried about their futures and will mean a longer walk for hotel guests.
Biggest change is high speed buggies (see picture) driving at excessive speed in poorly lit paths to the hotel. Golf reception and golf staff at end of day were worst offenders. When raised with hotel staff they said they struggle to influence as a different organisation from the hotel. We had to jump out of the way on 4 occasions. I am concerned about safety for kids or those with reduced mobility.
Lots of positives about the resort but hope the new management team can raise standards.

As you mentioned, Back's restaurant has closed and we have opened up Pearl Bistro in its place, serving delicious food.
We have taken note of your mention of the buggies speeding. The golf staff have been addressed regarding that issue. We do try to enforce the speed limit with other homeowners that have buggies as well.
The golf club is currently undergoing an amazing renovation and we do hope to welcome you back to experience and even better Pearl Valley.

Lovely resort in South Africa
A very good facility for us golf enthusiasts. Very good food at all restaurants. Lovely course with very good service. The resort is complete as a golf resort. Highly recommended! We're going back to SA!

Good. But is remote
The room at the hotel met our expectations. Nice pool area, but would love to see there are cushions on the sun loungers.
For breakfast, there is potential for improvement, which lowers the overall score and this is especially true for breakfast in the large building.
The hotel is relatively secluded so you will need a car or taxi/uber if you are going outside the hotel area. Uber works well and is cheap.
Franschhoek and Stellennbosch have nice vineyards and good restaurants.

Less grandeur than expected
Upon arrival, it looks as if you are entering a prison complex; the entrance and fences are secured with electrical wiring against all the evils of the world...
The access procedure is immensely cumbersome and frustratingly time-consuming, which I confirm after all the previous and ongoing comments that have been made for months. So the management doesn't care what the residents think about this ... it is and will remain so apparently...
Driven into the gated community you will end up in a nicely maintained domain with perfectly maintained beds and fields. Rooms divided into several ‘blocks’ surrounding a small swimming pool. There is another larger pool with slide for people with children. Rooms are large and equipped with every luxury and comfort...with a kitchenette that...cannot be used. Breakfast can be selected from a simple list and is served at the table. The fancier crowd will probably love this but it is hateful for someone who likes to have a richly stocked buffet, something you would expect in my opinion in the class the hotel wants to play in. The eggs benedict I ordered were nothing more than an elongated slice of bread topped with 2 overcooked eggs (ever heard of poached eggs @ management?) and that was it ... I wanted something more to be paid for... This is really unheard of in such a luxury resort. The dinner was fortunately of a better quality and even at reasonable prices.
This hotel is actually the ideal place for the peace seeker, in the middle of the interesting Franschhoek/Stellenbosch region. Add in the annoying stuff and you have a fantastic time here but for me (and my group of travel companions) breakfast is a ‘not come back’.

The breakfast offering is a plated, à la carte experience rather than a buffet, as many of our guests prefer freshly prepared dishes over volume. That said, your feedback regarding the Eggs Benedict preparation is noted and will be addressed with the restaurant team to ensure consistency with classic standards and guest expectations. We regret that this negatively impacted your stay and ultimately your decision not to return.

Excellent place to stay for a couple of nights while touring South Africa.
Beautiful hotel and complex in a gorgeous setting.
The rooms were spacious and exceptionally clean.
Breakfast good and the evening meal we had here as a big group was great.
Really enjoyed having a drink at the outside bar, overlooking the magnificent views.
Security to enter this hotel is extremely good.
Nothing not to like.
Weren't here for the golf but it looked outstanding if you were.
