This is our 2nd trip to Izu (the last time was in 2024 and we stayed at the Prince Shimoda). The Tokyu Excel is far a much better hotel even though it’s more than 60 yrs old. Refurbished in 2016, but condition was well maintained for its age.
We only had one dinner at the restaurant and for 13,000y for a 10 course set menu, it was value meal. Most of our meals were taken outside as we had our own transport to move around.
The staff were extremely helpful with our luggage’s and checkin was smooth. Each time we were greeted at the reception by the staff and both elderly doorman were extremely friendly and one of them even spoke perfect English.
The hotel room was spacious, clean and well maintained. There were cookies n coffee available in the room. The room faces the vast ocean and had a fantastic view.
There are 3 coin operated laundry machines/dryer in the hotel.
If you have your own transport: 2 places to have a meal (Kawazu - unagi Okawaya n Minamizuii - seafood).
Highly recommended stay and will be back.

For us, as a European family with youth kids, it was also good, but;
- the placement with the beatiful view IS a bit of a walk from the sleepy downtown of Shimoda
- the shuttle is super useful to / from the train during day time, but does not run in the evening possibly, maybe a mild direction from the hotel to eat in the hotel restaurant. Also the crew had a policy not help us make a dinner reservation in town.
- the hotel restaurant was nice and the food really good for dinner, albeit a slight bit formal to our taste, and prices in the slightly exclusive direction compared to other Japanese places.
- the outdoor pools were nice, but not heated (chilly water in early July).
- the path down to the nearby beach was steep, and other beaches around the city are probably much nicer
-as a European family with teenagers we did not make use of the Onsen - which probably is fantastic to others!
So - reallly good place - and probably fantastic if you are in the right target group.

Beautiful experience
Hello to chef ! We loved the great talk and wasabi. The food was amazing. The buffet was incredible with on the spot omelettes and a taste of everything Japan. Everything was done well at this hotel. The view was spectacular! The hot baths were heaven. We loved everything about our four night stay. LoriTrainor- Girard and Daniel Girard. Canada
