True Peace

Ultimately peaceful, and breathtaking, simultaneously. What a fabulous hidden gem, and run by the loveliest couple you could never hope to have looking after you, and the hostel like it’s a palace and you’re the royalty! It’s perfectly located just off the main road and yet you never hear vehicles from the comfortable rooms, the homely shared area, or the immaculately-kept ground - just the quiet noise of New Zealand birds and the majestic rhythm of the surf. The whole place is obviously maintained with the deepest love, and so clean you could just about eat off any surface! There’s everything you could ever need here, at rates anyone can afford. The rooms are lovely, the ablutions spotless, the kitchen well-stocked and the shared area has plenty of seating and relaxation space. If you lack anything, Robert and Eileen will always go out of their way to help. If you want to escape your stress and find true peace, this is the place to go. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The Place That Captured My Heart

I first stayed at Punakaiki Beach hostel 10 years ago, and it captured my heart then just as much as it does today. The location is simply incredible. The hostel sits right on the beach, with stunning ocean views, while the rainforest and Paparoa National Park are just across the road. Few places offer such an easy access to both the wild Tasman Sea, and beautiful forest walks. The property itself is exceptionally well-maintained. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are always clean, neat, and comfortable, and the common areas are some of the best I have experienced. The double kitchen is well equipped, the shared spaces are welcoming, and everything is thoughtfully cared for. What truly makes this place special however, are the hosts, Robert and Eileen. Their hospitality goes far beyond simply running an accommodation. They take the time to get to know their guests, generally care about the people who stay here and create an atmosphere that feels warm and welcoming. It is rare to find hosts who are intentional about building connections and making people feel at home many travelers stopping in Punakaiki only stop long enough to visit the pancake rocks and blow holes before continuing on their journey. In my opinion, that is a mistake. Punakaiki is one of the most underrated destinations in New Zealand beyond the famous attractions, there are beautiful beaches, rainforest walks, incredible scenery, and a peaceful atmosphere that encourage you to slow down and stay a while. All of the places I have visited in New Zealand, Punakaiki Beach hostel remains my favorite. It is more than just a place to stay. It is a place that stays with you long after you leave.

Lovely family stay

Great hostel, great views, great host. Lovely kitchen overseeing the sea to cook and have dinner (or play games) with the kids. Highly recommended!

Nice and cosy hostel with an amazing view

It was a pleasant stay for two nights. The view from the kitchen / living room is amazing. Located next to the famous pancake rocks. But there is much more to discover. Worth to stay several nights.

Home Away From Home!

Robert and Eileen do everything to make your stay wonderful and cozy! I stayed two nights in a 6-bed bunk room all to myself. The kitchen and lounge room were spacious, clean and overlooking the beautiful ocean. Eileen and Robert even invited me to come along with them to a nearby cave with glow worms at night and knowing I had traveled by bus to get to Punakaiki, they gave me a ride up into town on the day of my departure in the rain. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay!
