Small basic hotel, great meals, no A/C in hot summers. Super friendly staff.

You get what you pay for, and even more. So our global score is higher than it objectively should be: it is all in proportion.
The good: One of the only real hotels in that region, while visiting my brother in Chenaud, so we were happy to have a place to stay. We did not want a “chamber d’hote” (Bed and breakfast type place). And yes, the hotel rooms are very basic but also not expensive. Very nice restaurant downstairs, with great home cooked meals. No menu, just a daily special (do not ask for vegetarian options..if you need that, go elsewhere). Prices very reasonable. Super friendly and helpful staff. Great cook.
To make reservations it is better to call hotel directly, as the web site (run by a local chain of small hotels, LOGIS HOTELS) does not seem to work well.
NO AIR CONDITIONING.
SMALL ROOMS.
The bad & very bad: rooms are very small and super basic (but clean), more like a dormitory type lodging, which one can/should tolerate, given the low prices. However, not having air conditioning or a powerful fan during a hot summer day (in June): sort of ruined the stay. They only provide a very small ineffective fan. Obviously for people traveling when weather is not super hot, this would not be an issue -thus we do not want to penalize for that in this review. But do not stay there on a hot summer day if you wish to sleep well.
I read some other reviews/comments elsewhere about the (female) manager, who is also the main cook, that she can get nasty with difficult customers. Please ignore those nasty reviews/comments. We found her to be super nice. And good for her if she tells difficult / entitled customers off, because what do they expect from a small place like this.
You can pay your final bill (hotel & restaurant) with a credit card.

Very friendly

Very friendly welcome, good family cuisine. Clean Pension in a quiet location. The river to swim right next door, perfect place to relax. The town is pretty and not far from Aubeterre sur Drones you can admire the magnificent underground church. I strongly recommend this step

DISAPPOINTMENT

I don't know how this hotel manages to have a rating of 3.8 or 4.6? And be in the Logis hotel guide while:
The room, the tiny bathroom without a desk and dilapidated for an amount of €95 including meals and breakfast. (Bedroom 3)
Main course inedible (rabbit paupiette with rice soaked in water...) Nothing homemade except perhaps the potatoes....
When I went to checkout they wanted to charge me for the glass of wine! (even though it was advertised as 84€ without drinks or 94€ with aperitif + wine + coffee inside the room?!!)
I was also asked if I had booked online or directly because it would have been more expensive online?!!!!
You have understood correctly, I absolutely do not recommend this hotel at this price!

Preferred step

Very well located hotel, comfortable and quiet room, clean and large (n°8), welcoming and dedicated manager, parking in front of the hotel. Simple but excellent catering. Ideal for a stopover over a few days. To be retained without reservation.

Charming hosts, good local food, very reasonable prices!

Came across this place by accident near the car park in St Aulaye. Smartly refurbished inside, lovely little garden at the back plus tables on the quiet street. Set menus are good value - and available in the evening and at weekends as well as lunch. The owners and the chef were charming - they speak English too - and couldn't be more helpful. It was a Friday so fish for lunch - chunky fillet with a rich caper sauce and perfectly cooked rice. Home baked fresh fruit tart and pretty good wine. Three courses and drinks for 14.80 euros - and one of the most relaxing meals we've had for ages. Happy eaters and we'll definitely go back!
