Stylish intimate Chateau near Saumur
From the moment you enter the beautiful driveway through the gate you feel the peace descending over you. Our Alphonsy suite on the ground floor was very spacious, a lovely bed and a spectacular bathroom.
Around the chateau is a large garden with various seating areas and a beautiful swimming pool and hot tub. Breakfast is served with great care on stylish crockery and with local products, delicious cheeses, of course fine jams and tasty bread and sweet treats. In addition, Claire gives tips for visits to sights and good restaurants nearby.
We were lucky to be the only guests and enjoyed the privacy on the domain. The chateau can also be rented in its entirety for a family / group holiday. It was a wonderful experience and we love to come back!

Magical Castle Stay
A trip to the Loire Valley is undoubtedly all about visiting castles; we can’t think of any other better way to be immersed in this experience than to stay in one – and Le Chateau de la Ronde ticks all the boxes!
Turn off the highway and the drive up to the Chateau takes you through a canopy of gorgeous trees to the entrance gate, which opens to the immense and exceptionally maintained property that is home to this 17th century chateau, complete with swimming pool and rose trees.
With only three rooms (or room/suites) to choose from – we selected the Alphonsy room and were surprised on arrival with an upgrade to the Alphonsy Suite! From start to finish this was a dream come true stay.
A warm and inviting greeting from the owner, Claire (who lives on-site), we enter the living room that connects the three suites. The beautiful fragrance that fills this room marks our first impression of the interior – Claire is clearly exceptionally skillful when it comes to details and knows how successfully to create a space intended to make a lasting impression.
From this shared living room is a private door to La Chambre Alphonsy which takes our breath away. This large open concept room (80 m2, or 130 m2 if taking the suite) has beautiful natural light and is stunning in every respect – modern design and décor seamlessly combine with the preservation of the historical and original aspects of the room. The bed and linens are luxurious.
Just steps away from the bed, and a few steps up (four, to be exact) take you to the bathroom via a short hallway that connects this room to the other half, which, altogether forms the Alphonsy Suite. The bathroom is as elegant as the main (bed)room and is characterized by opulence – with walls tiled in marble, double sinks each with a lit-from-behind round mirror, a large walk-in shower, and a gorgeous free-standing soaker tub – all complete with plush white towels, Guerlain products, and a thoughtful sachet filled with items you might have forgot at home (including a shaving set, exfoliator, toothbrush and more).
Additional comforts and thoughtful details include a sachet with flip flops (should you be there when it is warm enough to enjoy the pool), robes and slippers, and extra pillows.
For breakfast Claire provides a card with the options – fill it out and hang it on the door. In the morning Claire delivers to your room (or the terrace if it is warm enough outside) at your specified time, the best croissants, jams, pain au chocolat, and fresh fruit, along with juice and coffee/tea. Like everything else she does, Claire does this perfectly - right down to the presentation of it all which is complete with beautiful dishes and silverware. Everything is done with intention.
Being the last guests of the season, we had the fortunate opportunity to tour the other rooms ... each one different from the others and all three phenomenally decorated.
All rooms are outfitted with top-of-the-line appliances and amenities – everything from a Smeg mini-fridge to in-suite Nespresso coffee maker (with a full range of coffee pods that are replenished daily) to Guerlain products in the bathroom. There is an in-room safe, and plenty of on-site parking.
Location is ideal:
- a short 5–10-minute drive to the nearby town of Saumur (where we had dinner every night),
- 30 minutes to the medieval village of Chinon,
- 25 minutes to Fontevraud-l’Abbaye,
- 1.25 hours to Amboise (and another 20 from Amboise to Chateau de Chenonceau (in our opinion, the best of the Loire Valley chateaus to visit)).
And then there is Claire, whose name is already speckled throughout this review. Claire is charming, warm-hearted, has a gentle touch, and is remarkably thoughtful with respect to the needs, wishes, and comfort of guests. She not only provided excellent recommendations for a wine tasting experience (Domaine de Roche Ville) and for our evening meals, but also made the reservations for us, including at the very memorable l’Essentiale (a bistronomic restaurant at the base of the Château de Saumur that squeezed us in despite being fully booked, thanks to Claire and her connections)!
The lovely family story behind this castle along with Claire’s desire and dedication to keep its magic alive makes a stay here all the more special.
Thank you, Claire, a million times over, for being you, for your precious hospitality, and for making our stay not only incredibly special with respect to the accommodation and service you provide (which is phenomenal), but especially for connecting with us so personally.
A rare find where both centuries-old architecture and contemporary luxury are beautifully merged, it is no surprise that Claire’s Chateau de la Ronde is featured in several magazines.
We highly recommend and would return if ever we find ourselves back in the Loire Valley.

Thank you for sharing your chateau with us!
1) Location - not far from Saumur town but far enough to be in a nice and quiet area. Secure parking which was a big plus, only guests with access code could open the gate.
2) Chateau - was stunning. The drive from the gate to the chateau was very long and impressive, outdoor pool was available but we did not use it as it was a little bit cool in September. On the last night of our stay since we got home still day light and weather was good, we had dinner by the pool and it was extremely pleasant. We were the only guests at the chateau on the last couple of nights so felt like the castle was ours :-).
3) Rooms - All rooms were spacious, elegantly designed and luxuriously furnished. Not surprising given the owner Claire was an interior designer. A big wardrobe with lots of coat hangers, large flat screen TV with many channels including CNN, Sky News and BBC but unfortunately no sport channels. A large & comfortable bed, fire place, a fridge and a table with high chairs for dinning & lovely curtains. Nice and thick bath robes were provided but surprising no slippers as they usually provided together. Got to see the other suites and they were even more stunning. If you are two couples travel together, it's cheaper to get a two bedroom suite which has access to a small kitchen equipped with a microwave.
4) Bathroom - nice and functional but was a bit small, may be due to constraint of the castle layout. Bath towels were thick & fluffy. The only place that provided such luxury toilet paper so large, thick and soft. Nice shower gel, shampoo & L'Ocitane soap provided and as usual no hair conditioner like many hotels in Europe. However, we were a little surprised that this luxury chateau did not provide a vanity kit such as cotton buds, shower caps etc.
5) Tea and coffee facility with nice tea bags available in the room. A small dining table & high chairs for in-room breakfast.
6) Breakfast - a form to be filled in with selection the night before. It's included juice, coffee, tea, cereals, fruits and Danish pastry. It's of top quality & nicely presented on a tray. It was towards the end of the tourist season so the chateau was a bit quiet so we got to have breakfast in a separate room which was very nice.
7) Few minor points for consideration:
- The huge bed lamps on bedside tables were really nice & good for reading except the base was so big there was no space left to put anything on.
- The room came with glasses, plates, cutlery and a mini cooktop but no utensils to warm food up. It would be better served with a microwave.
- Provide a trolley similar type to delivery vans use so guests can wheel luggage to the chateau as the gravel and lawn path made it very difficult to wheel modern suitcases especially when it's wet. We got this idea from our next B&B.
Unfortunately we did not have enough French to talk to our hostess more about interior designs as its her career and passion. However, we did manage to get the message across that her design and furnishing complements the oldie worldie exterior of the chateau.
It's so nice to be able to experience a stay in an old chateau with luxurious furnishings and the modern comfort!!
