The most fantastic place to stay in Sigirya!
What an amazing place! The owners and staff are all wonderful, welcoming, helpful and friendly. The breakfast and dinners are delicious and plentiful. The pool is great, the sun loungers comfortable. The cottage was brilliant, impeccably clean with very comfortable bed. Watching monkeys playing from our private balcony was a treat! It really is an oasis of calm and comfort and the perfect place to stay in Sigiriya. We spent 4 nights using it as a base for day trips to lions rock, Anuradhapura and the surrounding areas. I can’t recommend it more highly!

If you wish to induce vomiting, this is the place.
Glaramara Cottage, Water Yeat, Lake District.
DO NOT BOOK THIS COTTAGE. The description is a complete fabrication. It describes it as "immaculate" but it stinks of dog from first opening the door and it is filthy. The shower beggars belief. I contacted HolidayCottages.com at 6 pm tonight and have just been told (at 7.50 pm) that no-one is coming to clean it tonight. So, after driving 185 miles we cannot use the shower and will certainly not be preparing any food. We have had to find a hotel for 3 people tonight and repack all our belongings. I have never seen anything like this shower; it must have taken a lot longer than a week to get in that state. When was it last cleaned? Who knows. The mat could never be returned to a clean state as it is too far gone, there is dirt floating around in the water under the mat and plenty of hair swirling around. I do not think the mat has ever been moved. There is a large rug in the living room which has obviously been a bed to numerous dogs because the smell is horrible and there is nowhere outside to put it. The kitchen floor has not even been swept, so obviously has not been washed, even after a dog has been in the property. The kitchen table has not even been wiped. The freezer seal seems to be growing a culture. All the kitchen unit doors look like they have been cleaned with a dirty cloth. We thought about escaping to the outside seating area to eat, but it is nothing like its photo on the agent's website and the inviting description beggars belief; it has not seen a sweeping brush or a patio brush in years. Filthy. We have been left a very generous 3 dishwasher tablets for a 5-day stay with 3 people. They have all been used up already because, as a precaution, we had to wash every piece of crockery, cookware, cutlery, glassware etc before using it. But first we had to remove the bits of food from inside the dishwasher. Surprise surprise, there is not even a square of paper towel to pick it out. Just to top it off, if we want to know how to operate an appliance we have to download the manuals ourselves. The owners need to know that it is the paying guests who are supposed to be having a holiday, not they themselves. They have the nerve to expect guests to pay for damage! We paid £791 for 5 nights, it is simply theft. This would be a great place to stay if you wish to induce vomiting.

Opinions
We booked via Booking thinking of staying in a hotel, but it was actually a guest house.
It was our first stop in Sri Lanka after more than 24 hours of travel (plane + transfers + taxi to Sigiriya). We arrived at 21:10 and it was not possible to dine on site. After discussion, the host finally agreed to go get us a dish quickly, which we appreciated.
Contrary to the photos on Booking, there is no vending machine or bar on site (see our photos).
The room:
The interior corresponds to the photos. On the other hand, we were not at all in the green space shown on the ad, but above the reception, with a view of the backyard of the owners’ house.
Breakfast:
No choice on offer: a platter is served with some fruit and an egg-based dish, accompanied by coffee or tea. There is no buffet.
Very disturbing point:
We were served by a child about 12 years old. Her ease in service suggests that she has been doing this for a long time. She spoke very good English and was very kind.
However, we want to be very clear: we absolutely do not condone the use of a child for work, let alone from 7am, even during school holidays. A child must be in school or enjoy her childhood, not provide continuous service to clients.
This situation made us deeply uncomfortable, especially since we ourselves have children of the same age.
The rest:
The pool is nice to relax after the visits. However, again, no bar unlike the photos.
We also rented a scooter directly on site, without a contract or paper. Price: 3,500 rupees per day, without negotiation, for convenience.

Relaxing stay & a great base to explore Sigiriya
We booked 3 nights in a Water Cottage. Run by a lovely family who are very helpful and friendly. There is the option to eat dinner here which was handy for us and the menu was tasty with a good variety of dishes. The pool is very clean and has a nice relaxing vibe about it. The water cottages are spacious with nice views and a small balcony to watch the wildlife. We were lucky to see macaques, langurs, a monitor lizard, peacocks and a variety of other bird species.

Enchanting stay
Large comfortable room and huge bathroom overlooking an orchard (mango trees, acerolas, jackfruit...). Pools with lotus and water lilies in front of the room.
Beautiful swimming pool very well maintained appreciable by these strong heats.
Full breakfast that allowed us to test a different specialty for 4 days.
Smiling welcome, charming. The hotel booked us the elephant safari that allowed us to see between 40 and 50 of them including a 2-week-old baby.
