Disappointing stay in sub standard resort
We arrived to a hotel that felt like it was closed with construction work, closed swimming pools, fly infested food, badly maintained bedroom/bathroom equipment and requests for payment to utilise services that were advertised as part of our ‘all inclusive’ package.
The reason I am giving the Diamonds Mapenzi Beach 2 stars rather than 1 is the staff.
We feel like we stayed in 2 different hotels, for the first 4 nights we were in a sub standard 2 star resort with no management that should have been closed and for the last 2 when management finally made an appearance we experienced what others have mentioned in their reviews.
I’ll start with the Pros:
- The staff are amazing especially the animation team who went above and beyond to entertain our daughter.
- The beach restaurant pizzas are amazing
- Ask Baraza to bring you on a walk out to the reef, it was a highlight of our stay
- The BBQ night was great fun
Now the Cons:
- Construction work in centre of resort for whole week of our stay, thatch roof was replaced, mayor supporting columns cut out and replaced meaning you could not walk through area, dust, noise and construction workers at open pool
- Closed swimming pools including children’s pool (we were on a family holiday)
- We asked on arrival and everyday after when work would be complete/pool reopen and were continuously told tomorrow, tomorrow never came.
- We had issues with our bedroom everyday. The room was spacious and as it was a family suite it had 2 separate sleeping areas yet we were continuously left only 2 sets of towels for 3 people. The room safe only had 3 buttons on keypad that worked, one of the taps and the stopper in bathroom sink did not work and the shower gel was left empty.
We reported these issues and maintenance called but it was only when the front desk team changed on the Thursday were issues actually fixed.
- The food in the buffet was tasty and varied however you could not eat the salads, use jams, syrups or even try a dessert as they were all covered in flies.
- Cats were let roam around the restaurant and jump onto chairs as you ate.
- In the 6 days we were stayed at the Diamonds Mapenzi Beach not once did the restaurant staff manage to bring us a correct drinks order, we were only 3 (2 adults, 1 child), and we were generally ordering 1 beer and 2 soft drinks with water (not hard).
- The food and beverage manager appeared on the Wednesday night (day 4 of our stay) suddenly all food was covered, cats were moved outside and smoke sticks were lit to keep away flies.
- The ‘all inclusive’ package does not match what is advertised. The wine selection consists of red or white vinegar out of a foil pack, not even the addition of sprite could make it drinkable. Again the arrival of management meant our complaints were finally listened too and I was offered an alternative wine. Unfortunately, this apology did not appear until our final night but it did mean after a week at a so called ‘all inclusive’ resort I finally enjoyed a glass of drinkable wine.
- 30 minutes of canoeing a day is also part of the ‘all inclusive’ package however you can only avail of this ‘included service’ if you pay $15 each for the privilege.
- The beach was covered in sea grass all week making it very unpleasant until amazingly our last morning it was cleaned by staff to reveal a beautiful white beach
If you can confirm that management will be present and that the hotel is not actually half closed maybe you will have a better stay than us.
