Shiralee, named after a recreational planet in Star Trek, The Next Generation, is one of those places where anything can happen, and usually does. It's officially listed as a hostel, but it's far from that. Yes, it has three dorms, one male, one female and one mixed, but it's the 30-plus Bungalows that set it apart and create a unique atmosphere for travellers in Ko Phanang. I stayed in one of the 12 fan bungalows, and for the price I paid (720 bht, less than 20 euros a night), it was an amazing value. The bungalows are private, well-maintained, equipped with basic amenities, and include a hammock, ensuring a comfortable stay. Less than a 5-minute walk to the beautiful, natural sunset beach of Haad Yao, Shiralee has the added advantage of being located in a Jungle, where the sounds of monkeys and birds awaken you in the morning. It also has its own private swimming pool, providing a safe and relaxing environment for guests.
What sets Shiralee apart is its excellent bar, service, and food quality at the Hydeout Bar and Restaurant, which is the heart of the resort. Shiralee was originally a bar built in 2008, and then came the accommodation, swimming pool, gym and yoga area. Its beautiful hardwood design, built into the rock and perched like a treehouse, was handcrafted by its British-Thai owners, Seb and View. The couple have invested 18 years into Shiralee, improving it year after year while retaining its unique and personal character. They can arrange transportation to nearby attractions, beaches, and the Full Moon parties, making it easy for guests to explore Ko Phanang. Many returning guests appreciate the resort's convenient location and accessibility.
What stood out to me was the cleanliness of the toilets, the quality of the food and drinks and the hospitality of the owners and the staff. The people who visit Shiralee are a mix of families, couples, backpackers, groups, and solo travellers. This diverse guest mix creates a lively, inclusive atmosphere that makes everyone feel part of a vibrant community. The WI Fi coverage is excellent, and there are charging ports everywhere. I also availed of the laundry service at Shiralee for less than 100 BHT. I had all my clothes washed, folded, and returned to me in sealed bags the next day. It's this attention to detail that sets the tone for the service that you receive at Shiralee.
Diving and Muay Thai lessons are organised on site, and the owners offer taxi services to the Full Moon parties and local attractions and venues. In fact, anything you want can be organised at Shiralee, just ask, and you will receive. The personal service that Seb offers his clients is something you will travel very far to find. This is the unique selling point of Shiralee, with options for yoga classes, guided tours, and other activities tailored to your interests. Guests can enjoy a variety of leisure options without leaving the resort, ensuring a memorable and engaging stay in Ko Phanang.
I love staying in nature, so the local free-range flora and fauna don't bother me. If you are not comfortable around Jungle critters, then Shiralee may not be the place for you. They leave you alone once you don't feed them or encourage them to visit your room by dropping food on the floor. I spoke with guests who stayed in the dorms, and they all said they were well above average for what you find in Thailand. Noise at night can also be an issue, as a cool rasta club nearby opens every Friday night. The Hydeout bar at Shiralee can stay open late, especially when the Auzzie Contiki groups visit, but it's more spontaneous than regular, which makes stays at Shiralee so quirky. I watched clients who connected with the vibe at Shiralee extend their stay for days, such was the place's appeal. It gets booked out regularly, so it's best to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
All in all, I loved my stay at Shiralee. I met some good people there and enjoyed the owners' and staff's hospitality the most. I have stayed in many hotels across the world, and I would rate Shiralee as an experience rather than just a hotel room, just like the Star Trek planet it was named after.

Lovely resort

Lovely resort just a three-minute walk from the beach. The cottages feature a balcony and a hammock, perfect for relaxing. There’s a charming small pool, and while the facilities are basic, they are more than adequate. The restaurant is the heart of the resort, with good food and drinks and a great atmosphere. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. I truly hope to come back.

The best place in Koh Phangan hands down!

Honestly shiralea was like home away from home. The food was incredible, and all the staff were so friendly and helpful. The rooms are great standard, and their outdoor gym is a vibe. I think they have the ‘best toilets in Thailand’ - super clean and hygienic. I wasn’t even meant to stay there but I moved hotels to go there as the full atmosphere and way that they run the place had me the day I walked in. The best place I’ve stayed in Koh Phangan!

This was our first time at Shiralea Resort and we are really impressed!
The room was a little dated, but it was spacious and really cozy. The beds were great to sleep in!
The staff are very friendly and always help you with any problems, even when it's busy. That's why it's important to emphasize that we felt welcome throughout our stay at Shiralea Resort. The resort has an interesting design, as it's a mix of a backpacker hotspot and a resort with a pool and fitness studio. As a couple, we really had everything we needed here and will definitely come back!
