Food was really good here. Reception were very helpful with check-in, also taxis to and from Chang mai. Elephant wake up and breakfast is great for interaction for the whole family

Ethical "Marketing" Hiding Systematic Abuse

Avoid this place if you genuinely care about elephant wellbeing (Tawan elephant sanctuary/ Elephant friends).
I have never written a review this long, but if you are like me: someone who spent weeks researching "ethical" sanctuaries to ensure your money wouldn't support abuse; please read our story.
I arrived at this resort thinking I had found a dream-like environment where elephants lived in harmony with humans. I left the next morning, absolutely heartbroken and disgusted.
The Initial Deception
When we first arrived from Chiang Mai, the facility looked legitimate. There was a large open space and we saw an elephant roaming near the entrance. We initially ignored the others in smaller enclosures, assuming they were just transitioning. However, as we spent a few hours walking the grounds, the red flags began to pile up.
We realized the elephants never actually utilized that "open" forest area. They were perpetually steered back toward the tourists.
The Moment of Realization
The "dream" shattered late in the afternoon. We sat on our balcony overlooking the elephants and noticed three of them: a mother and her cubs, swaying rhythmically from side to side. They did this for hours. While "sanctuaries" might claim this is "just what they do," any expert will tell you this is a stereotypical behaviour - a sign of deep psychological trauma, depression, and the stress of captivity.
Then we saw the "back of the house." There is a single male elephant kept in total isolation at the far rear of the property. In the 24 hours we were there, he never left that spot. He stood in the dirt, swaying for eternity, used only for breeding to ensure the resort has a steady supply of "cute cubs" for future tourists.
The Lies About "The Law"
The most insulting part of this experience was the owner's justification for their cruelty. Every day at 4-5 PM, the elephants are chained up until the next morning (!!!!). When we questioned this, we were told it was "Thai Law." This is a lie. Through my research, I found that:
* Under the Draught Animal Act and the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act, captive elephants are legally classified as "private property" or "livestock."
* While this classification means there is a lack of oversight to stop owners from chaining, there is absolutely no law that forces it. * The decision to chain these animals is a choice made by the resort to avoid spending money on proper, high-security fencing and to prioritize cheap, convenient management over animal welfare.
Pokes, Hooks, and Bass Speakers
The cruelty isn't just in the chains; it’s in the daily "performance." Despite claiming the elephants "roam freely," they are actually forced to stay within a 20-square-meter area to be touched, bathed, and "played with" by a constant stream of tourists. We witnessed mahouts walking beside them with sharp sticks, poking the animals the second they stepped off the "path" or failed to perform a trick for a photo op.
The final straw was the nighttime setup. At 5 PM, as the chains go on, the resort’s bar opens right next to them. These elephants - animals with incredibly sensitive hearing - are forced to stand in chains while the bass from the speakers blasts and drunken tourists scream just a few meters away. Absolutely disgusting.
Final Thoughts
The moment we realized the depth of this exploitation, we cancelled everything and left. This resort is not a sanctuary; it is a high-priced zoo using "ethical" buzzwords to hide systematic abuse. The owner is a master of sweet-talking tourists, but the chains and the swaying animals don't lie.
Please, do not make the same mistake we did. There are so many local businesses you can support instead. Think THRICE before coming here, these elephants DO NOT have a good life.

Vacation

The setting of this hotel is incredible, offering a rare chance to be close to elephants in a beautiful forest environment. We also thoroughly enjoyed the dining, as the food was consistently delicious. Unfortunately, the 'luxury' price tag doesn't quite match the reality of the stay.
The elephant activities are extremely expensive, and the lack of groundskeeping is a major issue—you have to constantly watch your step to avoid elephant droppings on the walkways. Inside the rooms, the experience faltered further; we found numerous spiderwebs and noticed the facilities are starting to look weathered. If the management could focus on better maintenance and more frequent cleaning of the common paths, this would be a world-class destination. As it stands, it feels overpriced for the level of care provided.

Interesting and good experience seeing elephants close up and feeding them. Location is a little far from city, need to drive or taxi arrange by the property.

The hotel is unique that you are able to have a close contact with elephants, I did arrange elephant morning call and bathing in the river, what a good experience for my family.
The hotel is so close to nature that mosquitoes, flies, and other insects you can’t get rid of, you need to get along with them!
It is not fair to compare the amenities with that of any five stars hotels in chiang mai, you can choose, pick or stay at a cozy five stars hotel with your family but I am quite sure it is not easy to have such a close contact with nature and elephants at any five stars hotels in the city.
If you are looking for a nice swimming pool with a fruity smoothies in hands, this is not a hotel for you! If you are looking for a close contact with nature especially elephants, I am sure this is the hotel you are looking for!
