Fantastic views from this Chalet on a mountain in the Swiss Alps
This chalet is all about the location being situated on the side of a mountain about 1480 metres above sea level and just below the snow skiing village of Grachen. The views from the chalet and the outside terrace were fantastic with the local area offering some outstanding scenery.
There are 3 apartments in the chalet building with one large one at ground level and 2 smaller apartments under the main building built into the side of the mountain. We stayed in the Studio Apartment under the building and shared an outdoor terrace with people staying in the other apartment next to us.
Checking in was a little difficult as we had to find a lady in a village on the way there to get the key and to pay the full amount of our stay in Swiss Francs, they only accept Swiss Francs cash on arrival. We found the house but the lady was not home and her son, who did not speak much English, gave us the key for the wrong apartment. The chalet was difficult to find but we found it eventually. We were walking back to our car to go back when the lady arrived and swapped the key and took the cash payment, without any receipt.
The chalet is furnished with 2 comfortable sofas, coffee table, an old style small TV, DVD player and small music stereo, a dining table with built in L shaped seating and one freestanding chair, a large double bed that had 2 separate very firm mattresses and huge square pillows and there were built in wardrobes in the separate bedroom. The TV had only 3 channels in English and these were all news channels (Sky News, BBC News and CNBC so if you only speak English bring some DVD’s. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment including a large refrigerator and dishwasher but no microwave oven. The bathroom has been renovated in recent times and it had a very good large shower with an overhead rain shower and separate small hand held shower head. Outside on the terrace was new outdoor setting, 2 sun lounges, and a barbecue. The chalet was very clean but you would expect it to be so with the cleaning fee of CHF 60 US$62. We did find dirty dishes in the dishwasher though, from the previous guests. Check out time is early at 9.00am.
The most negative thing about our stay was that before booking I asked the owner if the WiFi worked well because I needed it for some work I had to do during our stay. The WiFi worked OK, it was slow and dropped out a lot, for the first 3½ days then it would not work at all. My computer could find the network but it would not open webpages including my email. I messaged the owner twice and the lady we got the key from once and also emailed the owner from a computer at the Visp Tourist Bureau and it finally came back on 2½ days later. There was no modem in our apartment so I suspect that 1 modem does the 3 apartments.
The other things we did not like very much were there were only 2 thin bath towels provided, no cushions on the sofa’s to support your back, and the 2 single bed size duvets provided on the double bed. A microwave and washing machine would have been good.
If you book this chalet to get the key follow the instructions provided and on your drive up the mountain you will find the ladies house on the right side of the road with a silver metal staircase, quite tall, to the left of garages and next to a wall on the left. To find the chalet drive past the ladies house up the hill and take the first street to the right. Drive up the street past a number of other chalets grouped close together then do a slight turn in the road to the left and the area will open out a little with houses more widely spaced. You will pass a large farmers type shed on your right with a short steep driveway down into the shed (this is where you will park your car) continue on past a chalet down the mountain a little on your right and Chalet Victoria is the next chalet down off the road to the right but it does not have a driveway but there is parking for 2 cars on the right side of the road just past the path down to the Chalet.
There is a good supermarket called Migros Partner in St Niklaus on the left corner as you turn up the street towards Grachen. We found the prices of just about everything in Switzerland expensive from supermarkets to restaurants and as we expected this we bought a fair few grocery supplies with us from France. We did not know about the CHF 50 Road Tax charge we had to pay at the border when we drove into Switzerland, so be prepared for that if you are driving in.
Would we recommend this chalet to our family and friends, yes for the location. I would not recommend it to anyone with walking difficulties as the path down to the chalet is steep and has an uneven surface which also makes it difficult to get luggage down that you would normally wheel, you will need to carry these.
Recommendations for things to do in this area when there is no snow:
On a clear, preferably sunny day, drive to the town of Tasch (19km just follow the signs to Zermatt), park at the Tasch Terminal (you can’t drive any further from here) it cost us CHF 10 for about 6 hours of parking, buy a train ticket for Zermatt and Gornergrat. Catch the train to Zermatt, change trains to the Gornergrat Bahn (The Matterhorn Railway) and go to the top of Mount Gornergrat, about 30mins and sit on the right side of the carriage for the best views, see some spectacular views both on the way up on the trains and also from the summit over many mountains above 4000 metres above sea level and see the glaciers there too. Well worth the CHF102.40 train ticket price. Explore the beautiful village of Zermatt on the way up or on the way back. We found the cost of meals in the restaurants very expensive for us so we purchased rolls filled with Turkey and salad from a bakery.
St Jodern Kellerei winery up on the mountain behind the town of Visp. Drive into the main street of Visp (Kantonsstrasse), cross the river, go around a roundabout straight ahead and at the next roundabout turn right into Terbinerstrasse and just go straight up this road, quite a distance, until you see the winery which has a large sign on its new timber façade on the right. This is one of only 3 wineries in the world that grow the Heida grape and the vineyards are the highest in Europe. After tasting some Heida wine or other wines they offer, turn right out of the driveway and go further up the mountain to the village of Visperterminen. This drive will give you fantastic views over a different valley and also down to the town of Visp. Depending on how long you stay at the winery or explore Visp this round trip will take about 3 to 4 hours. The Visp Tourist Office staff speak English and they have lots of resources for the area and internet for 2CHF for 30 mins. To visit them take the exit to the left at the first roundabout and the office is on a corner on the right side of the street, down a bit.
If you want to experience Italy we did a day trip to the old Italian town of Domodossola. The drive through the Simplon Pass offered beautiful views and with the European Union there is no border control. Our trip took us 8 hours but we stopped and looked at the views, walked around the old town of Domodossola, did some shopping (the prices are much cheaper than in Switzerland) and had lunch in a restaurant in the town. If you go you will need Euros to pay for things there. Drive to Visp and follow the signs to Brig, Simplon and Domodossola.
