Although there are some kind staff, the facilities are generally not satisfactory. There is no toilet paper and they don't replace the bath towels. Sometimes there is no hot water. There is often a long line for the elevator from the first floor, so we recommend taking the elevator at the back.

An Objective, Detailed Review. No Silly Exclamation Points.

This hotel is one of many apartments in Chungking Mansions, that's been subdivided into tiny accommodations.   The building, that's first two floors are occupied mostly by Indian restaurants, currency exchanges and cell phone shops, has a rather notorious reputation and while not for the faint of heart, it's probably not nearly as bad as it was many years ago.  The location outside the building is fabulous, near shopping, restaurants, the MTR, airport bus, Star Ferry and waterfront.
I went to the 10th floor, block D to a central check-in unit, was greeted by a friendly woman, who took my SG$20 deposit, and then was led to the 16th floor and up the stairs to the 17th floor.   Each block has two small skip-stop elevators, none of which go to the 17th and top floor so you must climb the stairs.  They are a bit foreboding and quite dirty but I walked down the entire staircase and aside from some crude ashtrays, I didn't see any rodents, etc. or more importantly, scary people....but you'll find them elsewhere!  At the busiest times, the elevator wait was 10 minutes tops.
My room seemed to be pretty clean and I only saw one small bug scurrying in my three days.  No one ever cleaned or emptied my garbage.  The room was just large enough to hold a full size bed with walls on either side, a small bathroom with pourover shower, and entrance way just big enough for the door to open.   It had a window, AC, fan, and a few lights.   Water was hot but you had to squat a little to shower.   There were soap and shampoo dispensers on the wall.   I was given one thin towel and had to ask for toilet paper.   The wifi was OK.   The TV had no remote and was unusable.   The safe and hair dryer were broken and one of two outlets didn't work.  On the plus side, there was a microwave, small fridge and hot water tap in the hall and mugs to make tea, etc.   The desk lady vaguely mentioned the use laundry machines as I believe one reviewer did as well, and I was hoping to use them, even if I had to pay as the laundrette on the first floor and others in the area only took Octopus card.  However, when I inquired with an Indian man at the check-in desk the following day, he got an attitude and told me no, even though I offered to pay him.  This same surly creep was annoyed that I woke him up at 7:30 to check out and get my money back.
It ain't much but for the dirt cheap price, and all the simple benefits, I'd definitely stay here again.

Avoid anything at The Chung King Mansion (36-44) Nathan Rd

First as you approach the building there are no numbers on buildings around, so it was a little hard to find. Outside your approached by arab men trying to get you to rent a room or sell you a ride to the airport. I saw the men swarm on a young asian couple harassing them as they walked a good way in to the alley. The alley is full of money changers. I have no idea how they all stay in business all the money changers next to each other. The elevators are on the left side of the alley. The only way for you to find it is to read the board next to the elevators, the board is full of all the guest houses, lounges, and hostels in that part of the building. The elevators are odd floors and even floors. At night there are lines to go up one for odd and the other for even floors. You might have to wait awhile since the elevator would hold only 5 or 6 at a time. You can't go up with the elevator from one floor to the next unless your lucky to have the elevator stop on your floor going up or yo walk up the stairs, otherwise take it down (there is only a down button for the elevator on the floors.
I can tell you I've stayed at two places in the 40 Nathan Road address (Chung King Mansion) and would suggest that you skip anything at this address unless again if your a backpacker or on a shoestring budget.
The room are small. Two platform beds, AC, television ( if it works or has a remote), and a bathroom.
The bathroom is about the size of a closet. The shower is directly over the toilet. The hot water is spotty (my wife said it worked one night and didn't the rest of our stay) I guess it's alright having the shower over the toilet if you can't stand for your shower.
I found probably better accommodations at the Holiday Inn or Best Western for just a couple of dollars more , which we would have taken advantage of if the prepaid fees were refundable.
Again stay away from any place at the Chung King Mansion unless your a backpacker or on a shoestring budget.
