typical 3* soviet hotel in old ashgabat
the hotel is located in old ashgabat, and surrounded by old soviet buildings.
the room decor is old and outdated, but who really cares, because it is still overall spacious and clean. the water pressure appear slightly weaker if you stay at top floors, so ask for lower floor room if this bothers you. bonus is this hotel is located just 2 min walk away from the turkmen state circus arena, where i went to watch the circus on a weekend at 6 pm for 10 TMT.
the biggest downside of this hotel is the wifi. it is totally unreliable and unusable. and during brief moments of use, definitely comes with firewall. if you want open/unrestricted internet, it is best you upgrade yourself to a 4-5* hotel, which is typically located in new ashgabat (the white marble buildings neigborhood)
second downside is there is always a loud evening event going on in its property grounds. while they are white noise to me, i think other guests may perceive differently

Better Than Expected for Budget Hotel in Turkmenistan
The interior feels somewhat outdated and Soviet-era in style, but the room itself was of a reasonable size. Breakfast was fairly good, and compared to many other hotels in Turkmenistan, both the breakfast and Wi-Fi were actually above average. The internet worked reasonably well when using a VPN — a detail that seasoned travelers in the country will probably appreciate immediately. Tiny digital survival rituals: connect, wait, sacrifice packet loss to the telecom gods.
As in many hotels in the country, the staff kept my passport until check-out since I was a foreign tourist. This seems to be standard local practice rather than something specific to this hotel.

OK hotel for the region
Before I review the hotel you need to understand what Turkmenistan is all about. I shall leave you to do the research!
For Central Asia this is an adequately good hotel. They speak English, Russian and other languages.
The hotel is well located. The rooms are a bit dated but not too bad. Tap water tastes grim, water pressure is really bad. I had a fridge but it was dirty inside. I had four nights and my room was never serviced at all.
Beer garden / bar / club to rear of hotel. Very loud but ends at 11pm. Fairly good food. Imported beers £2.50, Turkmenistan beer £0.40 for a half litre.
It is a good base from which to explore. I would come back.

Very Soviet, not terrible but could be better
I stayed at this hotel for a total of 6 nights (not all consecutive) as part of a group tour. The hotel is located a short drive from the airport, but not in a great location for everything else. It's a good 30-40 minute walk to the centre of Ashgabat, and there's only one cafe/restaurant nearby called Üzüm which is overpriced for Ashgabat (the Berk restaurant 15 mins walk away is a much better option). There is wifi at the hotel but it's restricted like most places in Turkmenistan, whatsapp worked intermittently. You have to supply a voucher code (given at reception) which only lasts a certain amount of time. The reception staff were mostly friendly, and spoke good English.
My room was quite clean and a decent size, but basic. With the carpeted floor and decor it looked very Soviet. The bed wasn't too uncomfortable, but not luxurious either. The bathroom looked even older. There was consistent hot water, but the shower water pressure wasn't great. The air conditioning isn't great here, you have to resort to opening a window if it's warm. The south side of the hotel (other side to the entrance) had a terrace bar, which played loud music until 10.30 pm every night.
The breakfast was subpar, and it started ridiculously late at 8 am. The food offerings were edible but nothing special. One of the worst parts was only being able to get hot drinks from the bar. Admittedly they were free/included, but it caused huge queues. I thought at the very least they should have had a hot water urn with tea bags that people could use themselves, and only queue up for coffee. 2 of the mornings I opted for breakfast to go (ask the reception the night before) due to early departures, this was fine but again nothing special.
I got laundry done at this hotel a couple of times. Compared to western prices it was very cheap, but for Turkmenistan it was expensive. In fairness it was very efficient. I also used the showers at the hotel sauna one day, these weren't that clean.
Overall it wasn't a terrible stay, but it certainly wasn't good either. I heard someone say it's a 3 star hotel with 2 star service, which I thought summed it up well.

Regular
It is not really central but has good accessibility. Pretty friendly people. Rooms with good dimensions but something used and spent. Air conditioning in some of the rooms noisy and ineffective. Avoid being turned to the pool because,especially on the weekends, it is very noisy with music in loud cries
