Great Hostel

Great YHA it’s old but who cares staff friendly breakfast mad but they got everyone feed , ample parking . Showers fine it’s not the Ritz
Will be back when the price is right

Do not book if you want to stay in your tent!

We booked a camping space and when we arrived had to find out that it is basically non existent/ no real camping space but a picknick space that was insufficient. Basically all full of roots or slopes. The staff tried to be helpful but the owner only offered us to bring us to another hostel, which was the one we hiked from…
Not even told us about the camping ground 5 min walk away. At least we were fully reimbursed quickly.

We are really sorry to hear your expectations weren't met for your camping trip to YHA Buttermere. Our pitch area is quite small but is flat. Most guest usually love the wooded area, rich with wildlife and great views across to the fells. We always try to accommodate tents, so really sorry that we couldn't meet your requirements. As you'd booked with YHA we searched for space at nearby hostels with camping so we could transfer your booking, which we would have been unable to do with the local campsite in the village. Really pleased that YHA was able to refund you quickly.

Fab hostel

Love Buttermere YHA. Third or fourth stay. I was lucky to be here out of peak season and mid week this time so it wasn’t too busy. Location is great. I stayed in the shared dorm and met some lovely people. The WiFi network change is a massive improvement - I assume it’s the same across the hostels. I know I’m here to be in nature, but I need the digital maps and apps to plan my routes and I could do it from my bed! Winning!!

Wonderful location and staff

Excellent location on the outskirts of Buttermere. It is limited parking so worth trying to arrive in daylight to get a space - great that you can leave the car there during the day.
Staff are very friendly. Our room was spacious and incredibly warm. It’s an old hostel and some areas could do with a deep clean like window frames and sink grouting, but it didn’t stop our enjoyment and at the price point paid, we weren’t overly bothered.
We had a meal on the first evening- the YHA menu isn’t gourmet but it’s well priced and not bad at all. We made our own breakfast in the well equipped kitchen the following morning, although the cooked breakfast looked popular.
We had a great stay and there’s a nice friendly vibe about the place,
