Room was clean and had everything we needed
Good to see young people with drive and enthusiasm for what they do
Didn’t try breakfast as we had a lunch planned but would have on a future visit

Dont Stay in Room 10!
But our experience was very different to these and the pictures on the review sites are completely alien to real world experience.
We arrived at the hotel which isnt easy to spot as the entrance is just past the Beefeater restaurant coming down the hill
- at the last second you see the sign for the hotel and you immediately have to turn into the entrance.
The entrance upto the parking area is quite overgrown with trees and the place would benefit with a reduction of the foliage all round the building to improve light and leaf drop etc and could do with a general tidy up.
We parked the car in a small car park just before the entrance door - the car park spaces are not denoted so we were later advised to move our car to a different area and park in a different direction once some other cars that had also parked wrongly had left.
We rang the bell on the door and a nice gentleman came to the door and greeted us warmly etc
He explained about the keys and how to get in and out using the key fob etc. We asked about breakfast and this was £10 per head (no reduction for small children who are not likely to eat much) - so this was £30 for 2 adults and a child on top of the room price.
We were advised where the room was located and went up the stairs to room 10.
Room 10 has a strange setup - you can see images of part of room 10 which shows the double bed and nice fireplace - which looks nice - but you have to make assumptions based on other rooms about the other beds and bathroom facilities
This is a family room so there is the double bed room then a corridor leading to a toilet / shower room and then a single bed room (which is where our child would be sleeping)
The double room is a fairly large room. It has a safe on the floor but we were not provided a key for this. Then quite a nice bed with headboard (the mattress was also quite comfortable). There is a small area to hang clothes near the top of the bed with 3 good quality hangers and a cupboard with small shelves.
There is a TV on a wall bracket at the end of the bed - dont think the remote control worked though ?!
Then some basic chairs and a desk / dressing table with mirror - then hidden behind the door was a kettle with some basic tea/coffee supplies in glass jars and some biscoff biscuits.
There was also a bladeless fan on this table which was very noisy and didnt cool the room very well.
The sash windows are nice but could do with repainting - however it was the window sills that caught my attention initially as they were covered in leaf debris and hadnt been painted or had any attention for many years. The trees were also encrouching and need cutting back. In the distance we could see a covered swimming pool which on reading other reviews hadnt been open for many years - it did look like that aswell !!
As you looked around the room you started to notice more defects in the room which could be fixed fairly easily - it is like this room had been neglected and any renovation had been been concentrated on the downstairs area and some of the other rooms and nothing had been done to room 10 at all. It wouldnt take too much work to fill in the cracks on the ceiling and correct some of marks on the walls with paint.
The carpets were also not cleaned. The room was very tired looking.
From this point forward it gets worse...
The double room described above is lockable - but the entrance to this room is also a fire escape so the main entrance door could not be locked so anyone could walk in and access the toilet area and the single bedroom at any time. They also potentially could walk up the fire escape stairs into room 10.
You would not be able to leave anything valuable in the single room or bathroom area [and you would have to be careful if you left the shower room and make sure you were decent etc]
We did not want our daughter sleeping in a room which could be accessed during the night - so at bedtime we left the double room door open and she initially slept in the single room before she was moved to the double room.
The single room was fairly small but was sufficient - again a TV was on a wall bracket - a electric radiator had fallen off the wall and was left just on the floor (not refixed??)
Again the room was shabby - wall paper was ripped in places - the windows and window sill was similar to the double room and not had any attention. Carpet again was not clean. Very Basic and in no way luxurious as shown in most of the pictures on the website.
Outside the room if you looked out of the window was a small building with various water pipes and a water tank so not sure of it function - it did smell quite bad though possibly drainage related and a light was left on in that buidling all night with the rotting doors left open.
On to the worse area - the shower room - again very basic
- the sink one of the taps was lose so spun round when you turned on / off the cold water - tiny bottles of shower gel / shampoo and a small soap wrapped in paper.
The shower is hidden behind the door and is the worse part - it is terrible and has dirt and black mould all round it - there are 2 rubber mats (which are still wet from the previous occupants) some long black hairs on the walls etc - YUK!! - we didnt use this and luckily only stayed here one night.
Now for the nights sleep or lack of.. the rooms are separated by a firedoor and the door to the escape (stairs going upwards / downwards) - there is a bright emergency light that is activated by any movement.
So if you had to go to the toilet in the night - it would activate this bright light and all the people sleeping in the rooms would wake up!!! You could not really close the doors as they helped remove some of the heat from the room - and you would still need to open the door to go to the toilet anyway - so when you did this the light would penetrate the room anyway and wake up the other sleeping party.
The setup was definitely not family friendly and we had to adapt our sleeping arrangements due to the worry of the open access to the room at any time by another hotel guest.
In the morning after a disturbed night we went down to breakfast and entered the breakfast room.
No staff were around so we waited for a minute and then decided to sit at a table near the breakfast buffet area. We could hear a very loud radio in the kitchen??? and various cooking noises (microwaves pinging etc)
Probably 10-15 minutes later we finally saw a staff member appear who had been in the kitchen !! another 4 people had also arrived in this time and sat down.
By this time we had already made tea and hot chocolate (this was also self service with a hot water machine) and had eaten a pain au chocolate and cereal !!! - The breakfast area had very dirty table cloths and every part (cereal to the beverage area) had marks - so not sure when they were last changed / cleaned?
Eventually the staff member came to take our order (even though we had been there about 20 minutes she took some recently arrived guests orders first) - as she would not have been aware of when customers had arrived due to her long period of absence.
We ordered a full english x 2 with white toast and some porridge for our daughter as she is more selective with her food.
There were about 6 cereals on the shelf (3 crossiants in an open basket) - there were flies buzzing around.
Large jug of milk and jugs of Apple and Orange juice - didnt see any jam / butter or any type of yoghurt etc.
The fruit "selection" was a load of oranges / apples but no other fruit (My daughter would of eaten bananas / strawberries / blueberries etc - but nothing interesting was there !)
Then some basic coffee granules / tea bags / hot chocolate in glass jars.
Hot chocolate was a strange taste - am not sure if it was meant to have hot milk or just hot water ??
This breakfast was £30 for the 3 of us.
Breakfast arrived and was mostly okay - sausage was bad quality and tasted precooked and reheated, Bacon was good,
eggs, mushrooms, hashbrown, beans okay. Had to ask for tomato sauce - again nothing was offered.
Porridge was grainy and possibly made with just water rather than milk - it wasnt good (it came with a pot of honey)
- my daughter left most of it [her breakfast had cost £10]
Then the kitchen looked like it was closed up and all the staff disappeared - the toast we had ordered never materialised. We did wait for a few minutes thinking the toast might arrive but then gave up and just left the table.
on leaving the breakfast room we saw the breakfast staff at a meeting in the office - so the service was non existant after the food was delivered.
We complained about the light in the room on checkout but there were many many issues - so we were glad to be leaving to be honest.
---------------------------------------------
Do not stay in ROOM 10!!
---------------------------------------------
If you arrive at the weekend I would suggest going to have breakfast at the Beefeater which is a minutes drive up the road [however it will permanently closing soon] - you will get far better food and service than here.
