Come for the stories, stay for the Cullen Skink!

Note: this review is for the restaurant, not the hotel.
The Border Hotel is known for being the endpoint (or start) for the Pennine Way. If you complete the 270-mile trail, you get a certificate highlighting your achievement. You’re also offered a half pint of the Pennine Blonde.
The owners of the bar/hotel, James and his wife, make you feel truly great about your achievement. James has some great stories that he shared with us while we were enjoying our beverage.
The Border Hotel is a great place to swap stories with others who finished the Pennine Way as well.
You will want to have a meal here too. The restaurant has standard pub food, but they also have alternatives such as Chicken Kiev and Schnitzel - a nice welcome after being on the trail. The menu changes monthly, so who knows what options you might have. Regardless of the options, absolutely order the Cullen Skink. It was the best we had during our time in Scotland!

Worst hotel,very unclean!!

Worst hotel we’ve ever stayed in,smells like a residential home,dirty & stained carpets throughout,light not working in room,internal rooms with window onto corridor where everyone walks past,velux window that is rotting and the glass in stained green ( needs a good clean)the velux blind broken,main light not working,mirror on one wall sockets at the other side of the room,paint peeling & chipped off throughout hotel,shower head secured with gaffs tape,wooden bath panel damaged,dinning room tables extremly sticky so much so your mobile sticks to the table,glass jugs for serving milk,juices etc all chipped,waitress said she couldn’t find any tomato sauce to serve with breakfast,dirty marks on walls throughout hotel,cobwebs everywhere,very dirty and tired looking,needs a revamp but most importantly a good deep clean!!

Dreadful service

Arrived on a Sunday evening for a meal. Place was quiet, nevertheless we sat at a table with our menus for 40 minutes being ignored until we walked out in disgust. Perhaps the place being up for sale has something to do with the lack of interest shown by the staff. No excuse though.
Truely bad experience.

Highly disappointing

Food , atmosphere, cleanliness, service poor. The microwaved food was cold and disappointing. Overall left feeling we had wasted good money on a bad experience

Great choice for st Cuthberts way walkers

We stayed here as a part of st Cuthberts way and this hotel went the extra mile.
We realised we were going to be late (past 8pm) and they offered to keep warm food for us which was very much welcomed as we had got caught in terrible rain and hail.
The room was standard and had everything you would need as part of a walking holiday.
Breakfast included was good and a full Scottish spread. Staff were lovely so thank you for a lovely stay
