We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Central Guest House. Instructions for entry were provided beforehand via text message. The front door sticks but luckily another guest arrived who knew how to get in and showed us the trick. It's in a great spot in the town, prefect for all the restaurants, takeaways and pubs.
The interior of the building is tidy if a little shabby. We weren't entirely certain which room was ours but we eventually realised we could just pick whichever room we wanted from the keys available on the table, so we stayed in room 1. The only real problem we had was that the laminated sheet with the wifi password was nowhere to be found. However, my husband contacted the owner on the second day, and that was resolved without issue.
Don't expect luxury. The beds are not the most comfortable but they're clean and do the job. The rooms are all a decent size. Sofa's are very comfy. The kitchen has all the basics you need although given it's self catering and we had takeaways too, we could have done with extra bin bags and a proper dish towel. The fire in the sitting room was needed as the draughts from the windows were pretty bad, but the heaters were quick and effective. Bathroom is lovely. Plenty of storage and a TV if you want it though we didn't use it.
Two bakeries, one either side of the entrance door, and both fabulous. Gregg's across the road. Breakfast times were a joy! Loved doing the Kelso Town Trail and watching the Kelsae Laddie being announced.

Don’t waste your money

This looks good on line , we were in room 1 . Very dated some of the carpets missing , vey equipped kitchen but dirty
Bedroom looks nice , but again missing bits of carpet , and the bed was awful so uncomfortable , hubby is over 6 ft not a great sleep for us both in a small double , bathroom was dated , no soap to wash ur hands , the only thing I did like is the shower was good , would of been better if the bathroom was clean ,
We will never be back go across the road to the cross keys , maybe dated but comfortable and clean

Better to stay out of town than this central hell hole

This accommodation is very centrally located,
That’s where the positives end.
Single paned drafty windows meant not only was the room freezing but the noise from cars and heavy vehicles going over cobbles was like you might as well have slept on a bench out in the square.
The miles from adjacent rooms added to this.
The room furnishings and decor is tired, visibly dusty. I have been watching a large ancient cobweb blowing in the draft across the ceiling.
Litter from previous bookings still remain in the bread bin.
The room features a small fridge, kettle, toaster, random collection of mismatched plates, glasses and tea cups and a microwave that looks older than me. I am 40. I used none of these things due to how everything else has been.
The bed linen looks clean enough but again very old
This accommodation was arranged on my behalf by a contractor as I was visiting with work, and honestly it is without doubt the worst accommodation I have ever stayed in. Never again, I am exhausted as I have barely slept at all.
If you see this accommodation on your search and it’s available just stay somewhere out of the town.

It needs to be made clearer when booking that there are no staff on site and to gain entry you have to contact the management. This is almost impossible to do as phone number is incorrect and just gives an incorrect number message. We eventually stumbled across a mobile number by googling, no one would answer the call but did thankfully text back and we were then able to gain entry. All this whilst standing outside in the pouring rain. This happened also to other travellers after we had arrived so we were able to advise them. The family room was big but decor tired and carpets stained. The microwave was on a high shelf that needed to be lifted down and placed partially balancing over the sink to reach a socket. There was 1 champagne glass and 1 whiskey tumbler to service a room for 4.
The guest in the room next to us and the guest above us both returned drunk and noisy late at night, whilst the hosts cannot control this I would suggest if you are looking for a family room, no that the walls are thin and you will hear all the noise!
The location is brilliant for the town centre and if the host would address the issues we and other reviewers have raised then it would be a good spot to stay in.

Not a pleasant experience. No access on arrival, tried to ring the number but not in use. 50 mins later a guest came out and I gained access. Apartment was very tired; no curtains on the windows; dirty crockery; dog hair all over the sofa and on the bedding. Bathroom and toilet were dirty. Very disappointing. Avoid this property.
