Disappointing pub with rooms in a beautiful setting.
There were very few staff around and the service was therefore stretched.
I appreciate that the hospitality industry is under pressure but first impressions count and although we had no trouble taking a table in the bar that evening we felt abandoned after 30 minutes and had to ask someone to take our food order.
10 minutes later someone came back to ask us to confirm what it was again, and then when my plate finally arrived it wasn’t what I’d ordered at all and they had to take it back to the kitchen and swap it! It did actually taste good when it arrived to be fair, but my Wife’s steak was certainly not “medium/rare” - (more like medium/ well done)
and the “red wine jus” rather like someone had splashed a bit of red wine into the same gravy that I had on my steak and ale pie!
There were 3 hand-pulled beers at the bar when we arrived but within a few hours only one was on offer. Either the staff didn’t know how to mange the beer lines coming up from the cellar or they’d not anticipated demand correctly and had run out?
As for the room, it was clean and functional and we eventually slept well despite the heat.
A word of caution if you’re coming to Cartmel on a races day: - it gets very boisterous in the square, especially if there’s a hen night / stag do and they decide to set up a ghetto-blaster in the middle of the square and sing along until well after 11pm - you’re not going to be able to get to sleep unless you’re as drunk as they obviously were.
It was tempting though!
Unless the owners spend some money on upgrading the decor and feel of the place (blood in the public toilet sink downstairs at 9am the next morning?) and get more staff in to make you feel valued as a customer we won’t be returning anytime soon.
